Design considerations for efficient operation of seasonal borehole thermal energy storage for a district heating system

Abstract

This thesis studies the design features, measurement and control strategies which affect the annual efficiency and profitability of BTES. The context is using the summertime waste heat from an incineration plant charged into a BTES to be used during winter in the local district heating system. I also reviewed different types of thermal energy storages and created a selection pathway for a suitable storage type.

I discovered that BTES is a good choice for a seasonal storage in favorable geological locations. Biggest threat are groundwater currents can significantly reduce seasonal efficiency.

Once BTES has been chosen as the type of the thermal seasonal storage and the location, capacity, and the physical size of a BTES have been determined there is still a lot of design decision to be made. Crucial design variables regarding the functionality of the BTES are introduced. Also, I introduce a calculation method to predict the heat transfer rate and the brine outlet temperature in the borehole heat exchangers as a function of the surrounding rock and brine inlet temperatures.

Significance of attached heat pumps is reviewed and design considerations for the in context of BTES operations for district heating network are discussed. In practice, heat pumps are a paramount part of a BTES-district heating system. They improve the output thermal energy amount and temperature level which then improves the total efficiency of the storage.

Tämä työ tutkii porakaivolämpövaraston kytkentöjen, laitteiden ja niiden ohjaamisen vaikutusta lämpövaraston vuosihyötysuhteeseen. Kontekstina on jätteenpolttolaitoksen kesäajan hukkalämmön lataaminen porakaivovarastoon ja sen käyttäminen talvikaudella, osana paikallista kaukolämmön tuotantoa. Vertailen myös erilaisia lämmön kausivarastointimenetelmiä keskenään ja lopputuotteena esittelen reunaehtoihin perustuvan lämmön kausivarastotyypin valintaproseduurin.

Porakaivokenttä on hyvä vaihtoehto lämmön kausivarastointiin sopivissa maaperän olosuhteissa. Suurin uhka ovat paikalliset pohjaveden virtaukset, jotka voivat heikentää sen hyötysuhdetta merkittävästi.

Kun porakaivokenttä on valittu lämmön kausivarastoksi ja sen sijainti, kapasiteetti ja fyysiset mitat on päätetty – on vielä useita suunnitteluratkaisuja tehtävänä. Työssäni pyrin listaamaan ja esittelemään tärkeimmät porakaivovaraston toiminnallisuuteen ja hyötysuhteeseen vaikuttavat tekijät. Esittelen myös laskentametodin, jolla voi määrittää porakaivon lämmönsiirtoputkien sarjakytkentöjen lämmönsiirtotehon ja ulostulevan virtausnesteen lämpötilan ympäröivän kivimassan ja sisään virtauksen lämpötilan funktiona.

Tutkin myös lämpöpumppujen merkitystä osana porakaivolämpövarastoa. Lopputuloksena voin todeta lämpöpumppujen nostavan aina lämmönkausivarastosta purettavan lämpöenergian määrää ja lämpötilatasoa, jolloin myös varaston vuosihyötysuhde paranee.
