Kotikissa ja muotoilu - kissan raapimiskäyttäytyminen osana kodin sisustusta

Abstract

Opinnäyte käsittelee kotikissan raapimiskäyttäytymistä kodin sisustuksessa käymällä läpi aiheesta tehtyä tutkimusta kirjallisuuskatsauksessa sekä tarkastelemalla kissojen raapimiskäyttäytymistä käyttäjälähtöisen suunnittelun näkökulmasta.

Opinnäytteessä toteutettiin kysely kissojen omistajille, jonka avulla kerättiin tietoa siitä, mitä kissat tykkäävät raapia kotonaan sekä siitä, mitä ominaisuuksia kissojen omistajat haluaisivat raapimatelineellä olevan. Kyselyn vastauksista ilmeni, että melkein kaikille kissoille oli tarjolla jonkinlainen raapimiseen tarkoitettu puu tai teline, mutta ne myös pitävät erilaisten huonekalujen raapimisesta. Omistajat toivoivat raapimapuun olevan edullinen tai jos se olisi kalliimpi, sen toivottiin olevan korjattavissa tai osien vaihdettavissa. Kissoille halutaan tarjota lajityypilliseen käyttäytymiseen mahdollisuus, mutta siihen ei olla valmiita laittamaan suuria summia rahaa.

Kyselyn vastaukset auttoivat prototyypin suunnittelussa, jonka avulla toteutettiin käyttäjätestaus. Prototyyppinä toimi neljä koivuvanerilautaa, jotka oli päällystetty erilaisilla kankailla ja sisalnarulla. Käyttäjätestaukseen osallistui kuusi kissaa, joille esiteltiin prototyyppi. Kissojen käyttäytymistä prototyypin kanssa havainnoitiin ja dokumentoitiin.

Kissoista neljä esitti eniten kiinnostusta harmaata sohvakangasta kohtaan, yksi sisalnaruun ja kaksi siniseen sisustuskankaaseen. Yksikään kissa ei halunnut olla aaltoilevan vihreän kankaan kanssa minkäänlaisessa vuorovaikutuksessa.

Käyttäjätestauksen aikana omistajien kanssa keskusteltiin kissojen mieltymyksistä, sekä siitä, mitä mieltä omistajat olisivat, jos heidän pitäisi itse rakentaa raapimisteline kissalle. Käyttäjätestauksen lopputuloksena harmaa, löyhäsidoksinen sohvakangas oli kissoista kaikkein miellyttävin. Kirjallisuuden, kyselyn sekä käyttäjätestauksen pohjalta koottiin ohjeet itserakennettavan raapimatelineen tekoon. Ohjeissa esitellään tarvittavat välineet sekä rakentaminen vaihe vaiheelta.

Opinnäytteen tavoitteena oli selvittää, millaisia raapimistolppia kissat haluavat raapia ja mitä ovat ne komponentit, joista kissat pitävät niissä. Opinnäytteen toinen tavoite oli pystyä luonnostelemaan hyvälle, kissaystävälliselle raapimistolpalle ääriviivat sen perusteella mitä tietoa tällä opinnäytteellä on saatu kerättyä.

The thesis deals with the scratching behavior of the domestic cat in the interior of the home by going through the research done on the subject in a literature review and by examining the scratching behavior of cats from the perspective of user-oriented design.

In the thesis, a survey was carried out for cat owners, which was used to gather information about what cats like to scratch in their home, and what features cat owners would like a scratching post to have. The responses to the survey showed that almost all cats had some kind of tree or stand for scratching, but they also like to scratch different types of furniture. The owners hoped that the scratching post would be affordable, or if it was more expensive, it would be repairable, or parts could be replaced. People want to offer the cats the opportunity for species-typical behavior, but they are not ready to invest large sums of money in that.

The answers to the survey helped in the design of the prototype, which was used to carry out user testing. Four birch plywood boards covered with different fabrics and sisal rope served as the prototype. Six cats participated in the user testing and were presented with the prototype. The behavior of the cats with the prototype was observed and documented.

Four of the cats showed the most interest in the gray sofa fabric, one in the sisal rope and two in the blue interior fabric. No cat wanted to have any kind of interaction with the billowing green fabric.

During the user testing, the cats' preferences were discussed with the owners, as well as what the owners would think if they had to build a scratching post for the cat themselves. As a result of the user testing, the gray, loosely bound sofa fabric was the most pleasant one for the cats. Based on the literature, survey and user testing, instructions for making a self-built scratching post were put together. The instructions show the necessary tools and construction step by step.

The aim of the thesis was to find out what kind of scratching posts cats like to scratch and what are the components that cats like in them. The second goal of the thesis was to be able to sketch the outlines of a good, cat-friendly scratching post based on the information gathered in this thesis.
