Abstract

This thesis deals with the use of hydrophone recordings as a basis for cinematic narration. The work investigates the utilization of high sample rate recordings in connection with underwater sounds, in order to provide a wider audible spectrum for the listener. The underwater recordings are the basis for an autobiographical documentary short film. The sound of the film was made before any visuals, and this process differs from the classic timing of a sound designer's work. When the sound design for a film is usually done after the picture editing, this thesis examines the effect of a different working method. This thesis examines the possibilities offered by high sample rate recordings and the advantages oversampling brings for the post-processing of audio. The film has no script and the sound design is the starting point for the piece. This unusual method is being examined as a process of filmmaking. Since the position of the director and the sound designer is handled by one person, the written part of the thesis will also reflect on the experiences of working in different roles while making a film. The artistic part is the most significant part of the thesis. Sound has a vital part throughout the process and the use of sound dictates the work of the cinematographer. Visual expression is examined through practical examples. The reason to create a symbolic visual language for the film is based on the atmospheric sounds. The thesis also shares the reasons that lead to work in underwater cinematography. The goal of the film is to find ways to express dark and abstract feelings of sadness through sound. The thesis is shared from the filmmakers point of view. Personal experiences are examined through the work done in a sound editing software. The use of audio recording equipment is shown as an artistic choice. Sound design is viewed as the core of the film as the sound determines the whole appearance of the film. Film making is a way of processing personal feelings through sound.
