Form as an embellishment – A study on shapes and volumes

Abstract

My master's thesis has two parts, and it consists of a written and a productive part. The written part backs up and supports the productive part. The result of the production component is four pieces of clothing and an idea collection designed around them. The written part consists of fashion historical research, which I have linked to my own work and my own interests.

The topic of the thesis is the shape of the garment and design aspects related to it. The work em-phasizes the technical aspects regarding the construction of the garment and its form, but also touches the topics around the meanings of shape in clothing. The form is studied through the research question, "can the form itself work as an embellishment". With the research question, I have tried to separate the material and determining aspects of the garment and in this way to focus the broad subject. The basis of the written part is the seemingly different design languages of the four fashion designers, which I have tried to interpret and find anchor points to my own design work. My own interest in haute couture, which I have tried to utilize in the process, also effects in the background.

In the productive part, I have worked using three-dimensional design method on a mannequin, and it combines the background research formed in the written part with my own tacit knowledge in design. Through my own design work, the thesis aims to trace the creative process and the construction of the shape of the garment on its ideological and technical level, and through experimental pattern design to create new ideas for the further development of my own work. The final result of the production part also reflects on the topic of minimalism and the representation of the feminine body through the means of clothing design. The outcome of the design work is four garments, which can be seen as interpretations of the aesthetic and ideologi-cal meanings of the four designers selected for background research through the shape of the garment.

Maisterin opinnäytetyöni on kaksiosainen ja se koostuu kirjallisesta ja produktiivisesta osuudesta. Kirjallinen osuus taustoittaa ja tukee produktiivista osuutta, jonka lopputuloksena on neljä vaatekappaletta ja näiden ympärille suunniteltu ideamallisto. Kirjallinen osuus muodostuu vaatehistoriallisesta tutkimuksesta, jonka olen linkittänyt omaan työskentelyyni ja omiin mielenkiinnonkohteisiini.

Opinnäytetyön aiheena toimii vaatteen muoto ja siihen liittyvät suunnittelulliset näkökannat. Työ painottaa vaatteen ja sen muodon rakentumiseen liittyviä teknisiä seikkoja, mutta sivuaa myös muodon merkitystä suunnittelussa. Muotoa tutkitaan tutkimuskysymyksen, ”voiko muoto itsessään toimia koristeena”, kautta. Tutkimuskysymyksellä olen pyrkinyt erottamaan vaatteen materiaaliset ja määräävät aspektit ja tällä tavoin fokusoimaan itsessään laajaa aihetta. Kirjallisen osuuden pohjana on neljän vaatesuunnittelijan näennäisesti erilaiset muotokielet, joita olen tulkinnut visuaalisen ja kirjallisen tutkimusmateriaalin kautta. Taustalla vaikuttaa myös oma kiinnostukseni haute coutureen, jota olen pyrkinyt hyödyntämään prosessissa.

Produktiivisessa osuudessa olen työskennellyt kolmiulotteista muotoilutekniikkaa mallinuken päälle hyödyntäen ja siinä yhdistyy kirjallisessa osuudessa muodostettu taustatutkimus omaan hiljaiseen tietoon perustuvaan suunnittelijuuteen. Opinnäytetyö hahmottaa oman suunnittelutyöni kautta luovaa prosessia ja vaatteen muodon rakentumista sen ideologisella ja teknisellä tasolla, sekä kokeellisen kaavamuotoilun kautta luo uusia ideoita oman työni jatkokehittämistä varten. Produktio-osuuden lopputulos pohtii ja sivuaa myös minimalismia ja feminiinisen kehon esittämistä vaatesuunnittelun keinoin. Lopputuloksena on neljä vaatetta, joka ovat tulkintoja taustatutkimusta varten valittujen neljän suunnittelijan esteettisistä ja ideologisista merkityksistä vaatteen muodon kautta.
