Abstract
The importance of cloud connectivity for industrial devices has become increasingly important due to its potential to improve the reliability and efficiency of systems. Furthermore, cloud connectivity is shown to ease the process of monitoring and controlling individual devices in the system. Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) form the cornerstone of many industrial systems. VFDs use Fieldbus Adapter (FBA) modules or embedded Fieldbus interfaces for connecting to other resources in the system. However, FBA module nor the Fieldbus interface do not have the functionality for enabling direct cloud connectivity between the VFD and the cloud service. Condition Monitoring for Drives (CMD) is a cloud service that has shown promising results in improving the reliability and efficiency of the systems that utilize VFDs. For this reason, there has been growing interest for the CMD service and for the option to directly connect VFD to the CMD service using the FBA module. This thesis develops functionality for the FBA module that allows connecting VFD to the CMD service. To design this functionality, the Azure IoT SDK was integrated into the FBA platform as well as DNS and NTP clients were created for the FBA module. Furthermore, the features were implemented to the FBA module for handling connection and interaction between the VFD and CMD cloud service, such as collecting, and formatting information requested by the CMD service as well as for sending and interpreting data between the FBA module and the CMD service. In the thesis, the cloud connectivity functionality was successfully implemented into the FBA module. Functionality allows connecting VFD to the cloud service using the FBA module. Furthermore, the thesis showed that the FBA module is a capable and reliable device enabling cloud connectivity for the VFDs.
