Abstract

This Master of Arts thesis consists of a written part Auringon piirtämä and an artistic part Almost there. The artistic part is an exhibition that consists of sculptures made from photographs and a sound piece. The written part reflects on the experience of being in a place, the motivations of the artistic work and the materialities of the exhibition. The artistic part can be found documented in the appendices of the written part. The starting point for the written and artistic part of the thesis is a three-week road trip to the west coast of the United States of America at the turn of 2019–2020. The work contemplates the concept of landscape within visual arts. It explores the landscape photography on the West Coast of USA taken in the mid-19th century in relation to the landscape photography of today. The written part intertwines a travelogue with a theoretical reflection on the relationship between photography, the experience of being in a place, and the landscape. The work examines the materiality and the imprint of the photograph and its extent. The text discusses the personal connections behind the work through themes of nostalgia, corporeality, and presence. These topics are more widely discussed through posthumanist and phenomenological writers such as Emmanuele Coccia, Ki Nurmenniemi, and Joanna Zylinska. They connect with the theories of Donna Haraway, Karen Barad and Vilém Flusser and personal experiences during the journey, as well as behind the making of the works, and outlining the project's theoretical framework. Furthermore, the written part articulates the artistic work process, the production process of the works and the construction of the exhibition. The text uncovers artistic influences and their work processes. The exhibition Almost there explores the experience of encountering the landscape on the West Coast of the United States and its surrounding wilderness areas, where photography plays a role in building connection with the sensory features of the places in the final, experimental sculpture works. Through presence, touch, and the trace of photography, the work regards landscape as a multidimensional and immersive place that is sprawling and in constant motion. The work consists of sculptures produced through various image production techniques and a sound piece.
