Ship design is done iteratively and is subject to the design paradox since major decisions are made in the beginning with little information available. Major changes late in the process are often not possible due to associated costs. Cost and weight calculation are fundamental to a ship project. Their influence is especially significant early when big decisions about ship design are made.
This thesis aims to research how the weight and costs develop during ship project. The focus is on the systems and equipment. The key objective is to enable improvement of the results of concept design by decreasing uncertainties of weight and cost estimations. Also the effect of decisions made in different design phases, the effect of small components and the effect of sister ships are assessed.
The research is done by studying the weight and cost data in backwards order from the delivery of the vessel all the way to the concept design stage. Studied weight data is from three RoPax vessels and one cruise ferry. A classification system based on SFI will be used to indicate the systems to be studied and to compare them. Cost data is available only from one RoPax vessel.
Two clear weight development trends are shown. Weights of large components change during basic design due to maker and model selection. Weights of small components change often during design process and large weight changes can occur in detail design. This demonstrates a need to improve the estimation methods used for estimating small components and extend stricter weight control also to design and procurement of small components.
Cost development shows that major decisions regarding ship design should be done during the concept design. Decisions on individual systems could be done in the basic design but decisions done during detail design have a smaller scope. Small components do not have similar effect on costs as they have on weight.
Laivan suunnittelu tehdään iteratiivisesti ja siihen pätee suunnittelun paradoksi, koska isot päätökset on tehtävä alussa vähäisillä tiedoilla. Suuria muutoksia ei voi tehdä suunnittelun loppuvaiheissa suurten kustannuksien vuoksi. Kustannus- ja painoarviot ovat ensiarvoisen tärkeitä laivaprojektille. Niiden vaikutus on erityisen suuri alkuvaiheissa isoista suunnittelukysymyksistä päätettäessä.
Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena on tutkia, kuinka painot ja kustannukset kehittyvät laivaprojektin aikana. Tutkimus keskittyy järjestelmiin ja laitteisiin. Tärkein tavoite on pyrkiä parantamaan konseptisuunnittelua pienentämällä painoon ja kustannuksiin liittyviä epävarmuuksia. Lisäksi tutkitaan eri suunnitteluvaiheissa tehtyjen päätösten merkittävyyttä sekä pienten komponenttien ja sisarlaivojen vaikutusta.
Tutkimus tehdään tutkimalla paino- ja kustannustietoja käänteisessä järjestyksessä laivan luovutuksesta konseptisuunnitteluun. Käytettävät painotiedot ovat peräisin kolmesta RoPaxista ja yhdestä risteilylautasta. Ryhmittely perustuu SFI-koodiin perustuvaan järjestelmään. Kustannustiedot ovat yhdestä RoPaxista.
Tulokset osoittavat kaksi selkeää painokehityksen trendiä. Suurten komponenttien painot muuttuvat perussuunnittelussa tarkkojen valmistajien ja mallien vahvistuessa. Pienten komponenttien painot muuttuvat useasti suunnittelun aikana ja loppuvaiheessa voi esiintyä suuria painonousuja. Tämä osoittaa, että pienten komponenttien painoarviointimenetelmiä tulee tarkentaa ja tarkempi painokontrolli tulee ulottaa myös pienten komponenttien suunnitteluun ja hankintaan.
Kustannusten kehittyminen osoittaa, että suuret laivasuunnitteluun liittyvät päätökset tulisi tehdä konseptivaiheessa. Yksittäisiin järjestelmiin liittyviä suuria päätöksiä on mahdollista tehdä perussuunnittelussa, mutta detail-suunnittelussa tehtävät päätökset ovat pienempiä vaikutuksiltaan. Pienillä komponenteilla ei ole samankaltaista vaikutusta kustannuksiin kuin painoihin.
