Structural Plastic: A study on knit as part of developing more durable plastic solutions

Abstract

Starting point, subject, objectives and limitations The bachelor's thesis is part of the NONTOX project, which aims to improve the recyclability and reuse of plastics. NONTOX is an EU-funded project involving many actors from universities and industry. The work is a material study in which it was tested whether a line made of polyethylene fiber backing can be knitted with a knitting machine and this knit can be pressed together into a suitable fuse into a heated plastic sheet. Polyethylene-UHMW (Ultra High Molecule Weight Polyethylene) is a polymer molecule made of polyethylene molecules by orienting a reinforced yarn which has the tensile strength to the strongest known materials and has excellent impact strength. The aim is to find suitable compression parameters for attaching the knit to the plastic sheet so that its orientation is maintained. The work focuses on the design perspective and the chemical background of plastics has been discussed to a limited extent.

Materials and methods The literature section of the thesis provides an overview of the NONTOX project and knit. In the production part, the adhesion of the polyethylene-UHMW line and the plastic sheet to each other was studied. Different thicknesses of the polyethylene-UHMW line were knitted on a knitting machine. The first test was done manually by heating the plastic sheets in an oven and squeezing the knitting reinforcement between the wooden boards. The next three test runs were performed with a hot press to make the adjustment of the machining parameters more accurate.

Main results It is possible to knit plastic filament bundle made of polyethylene-UHMW fiber with a knitting machine. The plastic filament bundle requires a slightly lower gauge value due to its stiffness, i.e. larger needles than a textile yarn of similar thickness. Additionally knitting plastic filament bundle is stiffer and due to the stiffness the heavy underweights are needed. The plastic sheets are compressed together at a melting temperature 125-138 ° C for the polyethylene. The compression enhances the plastics to join together, but causes the end result to spread. The knitting reinforcement was obtained to adhere successfully to the plastic sheet, between the plastic sheets and around the plastic sheets. The thickness of the plastic filament bundle and the knit structure did not affect considerably to the result.

Conclusions and recommendations The material study proved that it is possible to press a polyethylene-UHMW knit onto a polyethylene sheet. In future, research should be carried out on how the knit will affect the composite; whether and how much the knit reinforcement improves the impact resistance of the resulting composite. In addition, it would be interesting to test how knit reinforcement works in a prototype product.

Lähtökohta, aihe, tavoitteet ja rajaus Kandidaatin työ on osa NONTOX-projektia, jonka päämääränä on parantaa muovien kierrätettävyyttä ja uudelleen käyttöä. NONTOX on EU-rahoitteinen hanke, jossa on mukana monia tahoja yliopistoista ja teollisuudesta. Työ on materiaalitutkimus, jossa testattiin voiko polyeteenikuidusta valmistettua siimaa neuloa neulekoneella ja voiko tätä neuletta puristaa yhteen lähes sulaksi kuumennettuun muovilevyyn. Polyeteeni-UHMW (Ultra High Molecule Weight Polyethylene) on polyeteenimolekyyleistä polymeerimolekyylejä orientoimalla lujitettua lankaa, joka on vetolujuudeltaan suhteessa painoon lujimpia tunnettuja aineita ja sen iskusitkeys on erinomainen. Tavoitteena on löytää sopivat puristusparametrit, joilla neule saadaan kiinnittymään muovilevyyn, siten että sen orientaatio säilyy. Työ keskittyy muotoilunäkökulmaan ja muovien kemiallista taustaa on käsitelty rajoitetusti.

Aineisto ja menetelmät Työn kirjallisuusosa tarjoaa yleiskatsauksen NONTOX-projektiin ja neuleisiin. Produktio-osassa tutkittiin polyeteeni-UHMW siiman ja muovilevyn tarttumista toisiinsa. Polyeteeni-UHMW-siiman eri paksuuksia neulottiin neulekoneella. Ensimmäinen testi tehtiin manuaalisesti muovilevyjä uunissa kuumentamalla ja puristamalla neulelujite puulevyjen välissä. Seuraavat kolme testikertaa toteutettiin kuumapuristimella, jolloin työstöparametrien säätäminen oli tarkempaa.

Tärkeimmät tulokset Polyeteeni-UHMW kuidusta valmistetun siiman neulominen on mahdollista neulekoneella. Siima vaatii jäykkyytensä takia hieman pienemmän gauge-arvon eli suuremmat neulat kuin vastaavan paksuinen tekstiililanka. Lisäksi siiman neulominen on kankeampaa ja jäykkyyden takia neulottaessa tarvitaan painavat alapainot. Muovilevyt saadaan puristettua yhteen muovin sulamislämpötilassa, joka on polyeteenille 125-138°C. Puristus edistää muovien yhteen liittymistä, mutta saa lopputuloksen leviämään. Neulelujite saatiin kiinnittymään onnistuneesti muovilevyyn, muovilevyjen väliin ja muovilevyjen ympärille. Neuleen siiman paksuus ja neulerakenne eivät vaikuttaneet huomattavasti lopputulokseen.

Johtopäätökset ja toimenpidesuositukset Materiaalitutkimuksessa saatiin todistettua, että polyeteeni-UHMW-neule on mahdollista puristaa kiinni polyeteenilevyyn. Jatkossa pitäisi tutkia miten neule vaikuttaa komposiittiin; parantaako neulelujite syntyneen komposiitin iskunkestävyyttä ja kuinka paljon. Lisäksi olisi mielenkiintoista testata miten neulelujite toimii prototyyppituotteessa.
