Abstract:In my thesis I look at how to further develop the glazed-in balcony based on the development of the balcony in apartment buildings using a glass double-skin façade. A starting point for this has been a doctoral thesis on the Finnish balcony from which my work proceeds to examine the double skin façade of office buildings. As the balcony now has achieved its current role as an integral part of an apartment it now creates a starting point for new perspectives to deepen the integration of especially the glazed-in balcony to the apartment itself - not just as a personal outer space. Chances for development can be expected both in construction of new buildings as well as in renovations. In new building projects a new concept and emerging residential architecture could include more advanced products and methods, by which for instance requirements on energy efficiency and the quality of living could better be addressed. In new developments this would mean taking a more active role in setting out to show new directions. Renovations are a increasingly rising sector in the industry and it is therefore also facing a growing amount of expectations. Among these are matters concerning physical structures, quality and safety of living and those dealing with increasing energy efficiency. New development is much dependent on how well housing concepts can be turned into profitable products. Therefore, good product development has the potential to create a competitive advantage. The field of renovation also includes many social issues. Making changes to existing housing deals with a variety of realities that have emerged over time. Finding ways to cope with inherent resistance and imminent needs in such a way that local sites and potentials can develop out of that locality and subjectively valid experiences. This approach will probably need new methods between those involved. The user-based approach differs from the conventions rooted both in new developments and in renovations. A more diverse understanding also increases possibilities of general acceptance and ability to adapt to new solutions. The use of a balcony depends much on individual habits and lifestyles. The glazed-in balcony has become an individually equipped living space that at the same time has become increasingly transparent. This creates a paradox. Glazed-in balconies are criticized for storing up heat. This energy could be harvested. Directing balconies toward as much sun as possible increase these possibilities. The impact of a double skin façade to its environment needs to be considered. Evaluations should be carried out individually. In renovations conservation of the original should always be considered. In renovations a double-skin façade can improve usability, energy efficiency and visual issues. In new developments the starting point is more open and therefore its applications and possibilities are also greater. Executed in the right way, double-skin facades can become a new building type or -method for housing. Ideas expressed are only stories and indications of some possible directions. Technical matters have been noted to greatly affect the outcome, but at the same time the end user should be able to rely on a minimum level of interference with it. |
