Perceived development experience with cloud services: How an organization should decide between emerging cloud products

Abstract

Both the evolution of IT infrastructure and digitalization have resulted in high demand for software services. The cloud platforms have answered this demand and are continuously developing their services. This development has resulted in an increased number of services offered. The wide range of products has created a situation where the customers have a nearly unlimited number of available options. This decision-making is a nontrivial task. In other words, customers will have to evaluate different service models and compare several products in their specific use case.

This thesis has two main goals. The first goal is to study the differences between emerging cloud services. The second goal is to understand how organizations should make decisions while choosing between different cloud service providers and products.

We attempt to tackle these questions by employing a two-step methodology. First, we conducted a literature review. The literature review analyzed the current literature on emerging cloud technologies. Furthermore, the cloud platforms' documentation was researched to obtain information on the differences between the services. Second, we conducted an empirical study where we interviewed industry professionals about their experiences with cloud computing services.

The empirical data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. The results indicate that three main factors drive the decision-making process. First, the existing infrastructure and internal knowledge affect the organization's capabilities to adopt cloud technologies. Second, the software development process is influenced by the technology's complexity and suitability for the specific use case. Thirdly, common challenges for adoption were found, such as vendor lock-in and issues with multicloud, which can decrease the organizations' technical capabilities.

Finally, based on the thematic analysis, the proposed guidelines are presented. The first guideline focuses on evaluating specific use cases in cloud computing service decision-making. The second proposed guideline explains how the researched service models are suitable for the previously defined characteristics per use case.

IT-palveluiden kehittyminen ja digitalisaatio aiheuttavat kasvanutta kysyntää ohjelmistopalveluille. Tämän seurauksena pilvialustat ovat kehittäneet uusia palveluita, kuten palvelittomat tietojenkäsittelyn pilvipalvelut. Uusien palveluiden kehittyminen on johtanut tilanteeseen, jossa asiakkailla on paljon valinnan varaa eri palvelumallien ja tuotteiden välillä. Valintojen tekeminen ei ole helppoa, sillä asiakkaat joutuvat punnitsemaan erilaisia tekijöitä onnistuakseen näissä valinnoissa.

Tällä työllä on kaksi tavoitetta. Työn ensimmäinen tavoite on vastata, mitä eroja modernien pilvipalveluiden sisältä löytyy. Toiseksi työ pyrkii ymmärtämään. miten organisaatioiden tulisi tehdä valintoja eri palvelumallien, tuotteiden ja palveluntarjoajien välillä.

Pyrimme vastaamaan näihin kysymyksiin käyttämällä kirjallisuuskatsausta, sekä laadullista haastattelututkimusta. Kirjallisuuskatsaus keskittyi tutkimaan saatavilla olevaa kirjallisuutta moderneista pilvipalveluista. Sen lisäksi tutkimme pilvialustojen tarjoamaa dokumentaatiota, jonka avulla keräsimme informaatiota eri palveluiden välisistä eroista. Haastattelututkimuksessa haastattelimme alalla toimivia asiantuntijoita heidän kokemuksistaan eri pilvipalveluista.

Laadullisessa tutkimuksessa havaittiin kolme pääteemaa. Pilvipalveluiden valitsemiseen ja käyttöönottoon vaikuttavat organisaation sisäiset tekijät, teknologioiden soveltuvuus ja kompleksisuus, sekä pilvipalveluiden kehityshaasteet. Tutkimuksen mukaan pilvipalveluvalinnoilla on merkittävä vaikutus ohjelmistokehitysprosessiin organisaatioissa. Tutkimuksen tulokset tuovat esiin myös tekijöitä, joita tulisi arvioida päätöksentekoprosessissa, kun valitaan pilvipalveluita. Tutkimuksessa löytyneet erot kilpailevien tuotteiden välillä saman kategorian sisällä olivat pieniä.

Tutkimus kiteytyy ohjeiksi, joilla pilvipalveluiden valintaa voidaan helpottaa yksittäisissä käyttötapauksissa. Lisäksi työssä kuvataan, miten eri pilvipalvelumallit sopivat erilaisiin käyttötapauksiin.
