Designing novice user experience for an online community

Abstract

This thesis studies design methods adopted for an online platform in the remote environment for a startup. Motivated by the commercial needs at the case company, the project aims to design an online community with better novice user experience in the remote environment where there are only limited resources.

The development team in the case company consists of one project manager, three developers and one UX/UI designer, me. Our objective is to build an online community for photographers and also commercial website where individuals could book photographers as well.

The design process mainly follows the model of user interface design process addressed by M.L.Wong and C.W.Khong but was revised to some extent because of the remote environment and resources limitation. It can be divided into three aspects: Preliminary research, prototype session and the final evaluation part.

The presented work studied the selection and implementation of several design methods of an online platform design in the remote and startup context. The design was approved and praised by the whole team and would be online soon.

Tämä tutkielma tutkii suunnittelumenetelmiä, jotka on otettu käyttöön verkkoalustalle etäympäristössä käynnistettäessä. Kohdeyrityksen kaupallisten tarpeiden innoittamana projektin tarkoituksena on suunnitella verkkoyhteisö, jolla on parempi aloittelijan käyttökokemus syrjäisessä ympäristössä, jossa resursseja on vain vähän.

Asiakasyrityksen kehitystiimi koostuu yhdestä projektipäälliköstä, kolmesta kehittäjästä ja yhdestä UX / UI-suunnittelijasta. Tavoitteenamme on rakentaa valokuvaajille tarkoitettu verkkoyhteisö ja myös kaupallinen verkkosivusto, jonne ihmiset voivat varata valokuvaajia.

Suunnitteluprosessi seuraa lähinnä M.L.Wongin ja C.W.Khongin käsittelemää käyttöliittymäsuunnitteluprosessia, mutta sitä muutettiin jossain määrin etäympäristön ja resurssien rajoituksen vuoksi. Se voidaan jakaa kolmeen näkökohtaan: alustava tutkimus, prototyyppistunto ja loppuarviointi. Esitetyssä työssä tutkittiin useiden suunnittelun valintaa ja toteutusta online-alustan suunnittelun menetelmät etä- ja käynnistyskontekstissa. Suunnittelu hyväksyttiin ja kiitettiin koko tiimillä, ja se olisi pian verkossa.
