The prevention of progressive collapse as a design basis for RC-framed apartment buildings

Abstract

The prevention of progressive collapse is often mentioned in the design guidelines as a basis for structural design. However, there is no universally applicable method to prevent this from occurring. The common European standard Eurocode gives a wider range of instructions to prevent progressive collapse than the Building Code of Finland does. That is why the introduction of the Eurocode enhances the observation of the progressive collapse also in the Finnish design practice.

This study deals with the progressive collapse as a phenomenon and introduces Eurocode, and briefly also some other design guidelines, from the point of view of the progressive collapse prevention. The focus lies especially on the guidance that concerns RC-framed apartment buildings. The instructions are studied from the structural and computational point of view. This work does not cover risk analysis.

In the case of up to 15-story high apartment buildings the Eurocode instructions are mainly based on tying together the structural components which already have been a part of the Finnish design practise concerning precast concrete structures. The goal in tying the structures together is to prevent progressive collapse by enabling alternative load paths with, for example, catenary action. There were differences found between the Eurocode and Finnish Building Code guidelines concerning the calculation of tie forces for internal floor ties and the vertical wall ties. Especially the difference in the vertical wall ties was significant, because in the future it requires more use of tensile joints in load-bearing structures.

In the case of over 15-story high apartment buildings a more thorough research is demanded by Eurocode. The typical joint solutions in a RC-framed apartment building were introduced in this study. It was observed that the internal floor tie forces of levels based on Eurocode were not enough to form a catenary action with typical loads and spans of apartment buildings. There were also problems with anchoring the internals ties. These problems can cause difficulties in the use of precast concrete structures in over 15-storey high buildings based on the Eurocode requirements.

Jatkuva sortuma on ilmiö, jonka estäminen usein mainitaan suunnitteluohjeissa yhtenä suunnitteluperusteena. Sen estämiseen ei kuitenkaan ole yhtä yleispätevää ohjetta. Yhteisen eurooppalaisen suunnittelustandardin, eurokoodin, ohjeistus jatkuvan sortuman estämiseksi on laajempi kuin Suomen rakentamismääräyskokoelmassa, joten eurokoodin käyttöönotto laajentanee jatkuvan sortuman huomioimista myös suomalaisessa suunnittelukäytännössä.

Tässä työssä on tutkittu jatkuvaa sortumaa ilmiönä ja tutustuttu eurokoodiin sekä lyhyemmin muutamaan muuhun suunnitteluohjeeseen jatkuvan sortuman estämisen näkökulmasta. Työssä on keskitytty ohjeistukseen, joka koskee erityisesti teräsbetonirunkoisia asuinkerrostaloja. Ohjeita on tutkittu rakenteellisten sekä laskennallisten ohjeiden näkökulmasta. Riskianalyysi on rajattu tämän työn ulkopuolelle.

Korkeintaan 15-kerroksisten asuinkerrostalojen tapauksessa eurokoodin ohjeistus perustuu lähinnä rakenneosien sitomiseen toisiinsa ohjeessa määritellyillä sidevoimilla, mikä on pääpiirteissään kuulunut aiemminkin suomalaiseen suunnittelukäytäntöön teräsbetonisten elementtirakenteiden yhteydessä. Rakenteiden sitomisella pyritään estämään mahdollisen vaurion laajentuminen mahdollistamalla kuormituksen siirtyminen vaihtoehtoiselle reitille esimerkiksi vetoa kestävän köysirakenteen avulla. Eurokoodin ja Suomen rakentamismääräyskokoelman ohjeissa sidevoimien laskentaan havaittiin poikkeavuuksia tasojen saumaraudoituksen ja pystyrakenteiden pystysidonnan osalta. Erityisesti pystysidonnassa oleva ero on merkittävä, sillä se edellyttää jatkossa entistä enemmän vetoliitosten käyttöä kantavissa pystyrakenteissa.

Yli 15-kerroksissa asuinkerrostaloissa eurokoodi vaatii perusteellisempaa tutkimista. Asuinkerrostalon tyypillisiä liitosratkaisuja arvioitiin vaihtoehtoisen kuormituksensiirtymisreitin kannalta ja havaittiin, että eurokoodin tason sisäisten sidevoimien vaatimukset eivät riitä köysimallin muodostumiseen tavanomaisilla kuormilla ja jänneväleillä. Lisäksi sideraudoituksen ankkuroinnissa havaittiin ongelmia. Havaitut ongelmat voivat johtaa siihen, että elementtirakenteiden käyttö yli 15-kerroksissa rakennuksissa voi tulla hankalaksi eurokoodin vaatimuksien perusteella.
