- Calculating carbon footprint of student and office furniture
School of Chemical Engineering | Master's thesis(2013) Witikkala, TiinaIn this research is calculated carbon footprint for pieces of Isku student and office furniture. Also some comparative calculations were made to see the effect of material choice. The selected pieces of furniture were Prima 1130-desk, Prima 1128-desk and wood composite student chair. The main raw materials for the student furniture are wood based materials and metal. The selected pieces of office furniture were Matrix T EL-office desk, Step 23B-office chair and Tendo-cabinet with a veneer sliding door. The main raw material for office furniture is chipboard and metal for the desk, wool-polyamide fabric, plastic and metal. The cabinet is mainly from particleboard and HDF-board. Some veneer is used in the framing and in the sliding poor. The method of carbon foot calculation is determined by life cycle assessment. The chosen impact category was the global warming potential (GWP100). The inventory analysis was conducted in Isku factories in Lahti. Paint, glue and varnish amounts were available from Isku's own database. The modelling of the process and calculations were made with GaBi 4-program and by ISO 14044 standard. The results of the calculations were to Prima 1130-desk 41,68 kg CO2-equivalent, Prima 1128-desk 39,87 kg CO2-equivalent and to the student chair 42,21 kg CO2-equivalent. The carbon footprint consists mainly from the metal and wooden parts and from the electricity. The results of office furniture are for Matrix-desk 202,36 kg CO2-equivalent, Step-chair 75,81 kg CO2-equivalent and for the Tendo cabinet 74,62 kg CO2-equivalent.
