Item The multitude intelligence: A topological approach formalizing informal settlements as vernacular heritage(2023) Wang, Yipin; ; ark; Taiteiden ja suunnittelun korkeakoulu; School of Arts, Design and Architecture; Kotnik, ToniWith the increasing emphasize on habitability, humanity and sustainability, the massive property of vernacular settlements arises interests from architectural theorists all over the world as a reference of imaging new development path. This thesis would try to argue that informal settlements could also be seen as contemporary vernacular production, and to propose a design based on the computational combination of patterns from vernacular and informal settlements in a topological frame to imagine new residence community in the future. The method involves literature review and two qualitative case studies about the patterns in vernacular and informal settlements in Ahmedabad and Lingnan area, to find patterns connecting social behaviours and spatial layout in specific context. The result consists of patterns summarized from comparison of the case studies to illustrate the general strategies facing similar bioclimatic requirements and the different choices behind the singularities of each spatial-temporal context, and a design proposal in Hong Kong as an extension of the case study in Lingnan, based on the articulation of previous patterns in a topological frame that deconstructs current design issues into connected elementary parts in different scale, and three-dimensional self-aggregation algorithm to realize patterns into a specific spatial description through the automatic aggregation of different spatial elements in coded relations. The thesis tries to provide a primary demonstration of a topological approach to formalize patterns outside urban environment in the future development of urbanization and tries to open the speculation of computational design in the emergence of communal construction in physical and visual reality.
