Helsinki University of Technology | Master's thesis(1970) Virkkunen, Antti - Generalised Asset tracking application
School of Science | Master's thesis(2010) Alatalo, HeikkiAsset tracking is a term referring to tracking different types of moveable assets, such as bins, containers or other transport items. There are many ways to automatize asset tracking. One method for automatizing data capture is RFID technology, in which the asset is tagged with an RFID tag containing an identifying code and possibly some other data stored into a microchip. In this thesis we developed a prototype of an application intended for asset tracking. This application receives events registered by RFID readers and processes them 80 that it can generate data which it can forward to business process applications, such as asset management applications. The conclusion of this thesis is that a generalised asset tracking application can effectively process data which it receives from RFID readers, and also that it can offer the reader applications the type of services that their users need in order to gather and process data. Concerning the business applications, the application can very well fulfill the critical requirements related to forwarding useful business data that has been generated from the events, but the utility of the application is limited by the fact that the connection means and interfaces to business application vary greatly. - Mobile Data Communications in an RFID Based Supply Chain Asset Management System

School of Science | Master's thesis(2010) Kolehmainen, AnssiEmbedded devices are used for autonomous data collection in various environments. This thesis looks at RFID readers and their controllers through analysis of four different cases. The systems are in real world use and have gathered lots of data. Problems encountered with the systems are summarized and that data is used to build a layered system model to represent possible failures in different parts. Furthermore the different communication protocols between readers and controllers are analyzed and their recovery from network errors is measured.
