- Compensating the transmission delay in networked control systems
A4 Artikkeli konferenssijulkaisussa(2007) Vatanski, Nikolai; Georges, Jean-Philip; Aubrun, Christopher; Rondeau, Eric; Jämsä-Jounela, Sirkka-LiisaRecent interest in networked control systems (NCS) has instigated research in both communication networks and control. Analysis of NCSs has usually been performed from either the network or the control point of view, but not many papers exist where the analysis of both is done in the same context. In this paper an overall analysis of the networked control system is presented. First, the procedure of obtaining the upper bound delay value for packet transmission in the switched Ethernet network is presented. The upper bound delay algorithm applies ideas from network calculus theory. Next, the obtained delay estimate is utilised in delay compensation for improving the Quality of Performance (QoP) of the control systems. For the improvement of the performance a robust control based delay compensation strategy is used. - Control Loop Performance Measures in the Evaluation of Process economics
A4 Artikkeli konferenssijulkaisussa(2005) Vatanski, Nikolai; Jämsä-Jounela, Sirkka-Liisa; Rantala, Ari; Harju, TimoThe number of control loops used in industry is growing continuously and there are problems in keeping them working at a satisfactory level. One reason for the poor performance is the lack of maintenance of control loops. Economical benefits can result from the better maintenance of control loops. In this paper the economic aspects of control loop performance measures are discussed. A strategy is proposed to evaluate the economics of control performance using control loop performance measures. In addition, a case study on an industrial process is also described. It is anticipated that the framework introduced in this paper may prove useful in presenting control quality in a common language understood by operators, engineers and management. - Control Reconfiguration in Networked Control System
A4 Artikkeli konferenssijulkaisussa(2006) Vatanski, Nikolai; Georges, Jean-Philippe; Aubrun, C.; Jämsä-Jounela, Sirkka-LiisaIn the research on the networked control systems (NCS) the performance of the control system is assumed to be affected by network induced parameters such as delays, jitters, packet losses, link failures. In this paper a reconfiguration of the network control is presented. The upper bound delay of the transmission time of a packet is monitored with the network calculus based algorithm. A modification of the network parameters due to a failure is reflected by an increase of the upper bound value. Two reconfiguration procedures are proposed which aim at compensating the effect of the failure on the QoS. - DATA BASED FAULT DETECTION OF THE ONLINE ANALYSERS IN A DEAROMATISATION PROCESS

Helsinki University of Technology | Master's thesis(2008) Quaicoe, Francis Amoako - Networked control with delay measurement and estimation
Kemian tekniikan korkeakoulu | Doctoral dissertation (monograph)(2011) Vatanski, NikolaiAs future industrial communication network solutions move towards industrial Ethernet based solutions, monitoring and control of network parameters and control of the network will gain more attention than previously in order to achieve unperturbed performance. The main challenges in implementation of Ethernet based solutions in control applications come from the fact that the performance of the network is priory nondeterministic and may change according to the load in the network. Respectively, this perturbed operation of the communication network may affect on efficiency and performance of the control application. This work focuses on performance improvement of a control application that is controlled over a switched Ethernet network. In such networks main network parameter that may pose perturbation in performance is the network-induced delay. With novel network instrumentation and network performance estimation methods the behavior of the network-induced delay in the switched Ethernet network is described. The outputs of these methods are used in the control strategies to compensate for the deterious effect of the network. First, a method for measuring the network information, particularly the network-induced transmission delay, is presented. Next, this information is utilized in control design. Two control approaches are developed, which differ with respect to the time-variant behavior of the delay measurements. A Smith predictor based approach is proposed for the case where network time delay variation is low, and polynomial system based time variant controller and observer design is proposed for the case where time variation is high. Second, methods for estimating the network-induced transmission delay, is presented and utilized in control design. Two control approaches based on robust control theory are developed, which differ with respect to ability to take into account in addition of delay variation also other uncertainty sources, such as model uncertainty and measurement errors. The developed control designs are tested with simulations as well as on the experimental platform. From the results it is clear that utilization of the methods improve performance of the application. From the results it is also clear that no single method is suitable for all the cases, but the choice should be based on detail investigation of available instrumentation, magnitude of network delay variation, and uncertainty sources coming from the process. - Networked control with delay measurement and estimation
A1 Alkuperäisartikkeli tieteellisessä aikakauslehdessä(2009) Vatanski, Nikolai; Georges, Jean-Philippe; Aubrun, Christophe; Jämsä-Jounela, Sirkka-LiisaIn research on networked control systems (NCS), the performance of the control system is assumed to be affected by network-induced parameters such as delays, jitters, packet losses and link failures. In this paper, two delay compensation methods are studied, adaptive Smith Predictor and robust control, in the framework of Networked Control Systems while considering the protocol specifications. First, a clock synchronization protocol is implemented in each device of the network, thereby providing the possibility of end-to-end delay measurement, and a compensation strategy based on this measurement and the adaptive Smith Predictor is applied. Secondly, the end-to-end upper bound delay estimate is calculated on the basis of the network architecture and the traffic estimation, and then subsequently used in a robust control based compensation strategy. The switched Ethernet network is used as an example of the communication network of the NCS. - New time variant control system design for networked control systems
A4 Artikkeli konferenssijulkaisussa(2008) Vatanski, Nikolai; Ylinen, Raimo; Jämsä-Jounela, Sirkka-Liisa - Plant-wide disturbance detection and diagnosis
Helsinki University of Technology | Master's thesis(2008) Zhang, DiThe plant-wide disturbance can affect the product quality, manufacturing costs, process safety and environment. Early detection and diagnosis of the occurrence of an abnormal event in an operating plant help avoid these problems. The detection and diagnosis problem in single control loop has been well studied during the last two decades, and many methods have been used in process performance monitoring. However, neither the equipment nor control loops are isolated from each other; instead, they may have interactions. The poor performance of one control loop can be caused by a fault that has propagated from the other part of the process. If the origin of the plant-wide disturbance is identified, then the secondary fault will be determined without further actions. Hence plant-wide approach is receiving more and more attention. The aim of this master thesis was to design a general plant-wide performance monitoring concept. The following modules are part of the system: data collection, plant-wide disturbance detection and root cause diagnosis. In the literature part, the plant-wide disturbance detection methods are reviewed and then a summary of the root cause diagnosis methods is presented and discussed. In the experimental part, the general concept of plant-wide process monitoring is proposed first. Then one specific plant-wide process monitoring case is introduced, and used to evaluate the concept. A paper making process implemented in the APROS Paper simulator is used as a testing platform. In the case study, the integral of absolute error (IAE) method and the auto covariance function (ACF) method are used for the plant-wide disturbance detection. The causal diagraph method is subsequently used for the root cause diagnosis. Finally, an analysis of the results achieved is provided and conclusions are drawn. - Robust Control Compensation Based on Upper Bound Delay in Networked Control Systems

Helsinki University of Technology | Master's thesis(2004) Vatanski, NikolaiTyypillisessä prosessiteollisuuden tehtaassa on satoja säätöpiirejä, joista tutkimusten mukaan suuri osa toimii huonosti. Yhtenä syynä tähän on pidetty säätöpiirien virittämiskäytäntöä. Lopuksi on ehdotettu analysointistrategia, jolla voidaan arvioida säätöpiirien taloudellisuuksia suorituskykyindeksien avulla. - Use of Upper Bound Delay Estimate in Stability Analysis and Robust Control Compensation in Networked Control Systems
A4 Artikkeli konferenssijulkaisussa(2006) Georges, Jean-Philippe; Vatanski, Nikolai; Rondeau, E.; Jämsä-Jounela, Sirkka-LiisaRecent interest in networked control systems (NCS) has instigated research in various areas of both communication networks and control. The analysis of NCS has often been performed either from the network, or the control point of view and not many papers exist were the analysis of both is done in the same context. Here a simple overall analysis is presented. In the paper the procedure of obtaining the upper bound delay value in the switched Ethernet network is proposed and the obtained delay estimate is used in stability analysis of the feedback loop and in the control compensation. The upper bound delay algorithm is based on the network calculus theory, the stability analysis uses the small gain theorem, and control compensating strategy is based on Smith predictor, where however the upper bound delay is utilised in obtaining the delay estimate.
