School of Arts, Design and Architecture | Doctoral dissertation (monograph)(2022) Tikka, HannuThe purpose of this study is to assess the quality of Finnish public construction, the physical properties of buildings, the most important stages of design processes and the challenges and risk factors related to design stages from the perspective of the principal designer. A total of 38 principal designers were interviewed for this study. The core goal of the study is to generate new information about the different stages of design processes and the difficulties associated with the processes, so that designers can prepare for future challenges in advance. The design process of a public building is multi-staged and long in duration, so the designer encounters a variety of surprising situations during the process. Ten public cultural buildings planned in Finland were selected for further analysis. The buildings selected for analysis are all realized through an architectural competition, except for the Amos Rex Art Museum. In two of the cases (The Sibelius Hall in Lahti and Raisio Library), the author has worked as the principal designer. The selected projects have been implemented between years1999 and 2019, when the planning paradigm will also change over a sufficiently long period of time. In this study, the principal designers themselves describe and evaluate the factors that influenced the success of the project and the design processes. The material will also be supplemented by otherinterviews with principal designers and specialists. Other sources of information are the professional literature in the field and scientific studies related to the topic of the research. The scope of this study does not include user experiences, although the meaning of this group in the design process is significant. Similarly, issues related to ecology and the energy economy of buildings are excluded from this study, because the recording of such results would have required long term technical monitoring. Although the experiences of the principal designers are subjective, their presentation and recording increase the understanding of the challenges of the design processes. There are different challenges associated with various design stages. The early stage of the architectural design takes place with asmall number of designers, where the biggest difficulty is to find the right solutions for the task at hand. As the planning circle expands, the possibility of challenges to the process increases. The increase in the size of the design team as design progresses poses its own operational challenges. Tangledcommunication makes it difficult for different groups to work together. Synergy within the design team is prone to outside criticism and suspicion. As the design team grows, creating a positive team spirit is a prerequisite for a smooth process. Based on the results of the study, there are difficulties associated with all stages of design, with a focus on architectural design. Based on the evaluation material, the common challenges are typically the lack of initial project information, unfeasible scheduling, increasing construction and design costs, difficulties in cooperating with the parties involved in the projects, and the activities of other design consultants. As a positive feature, the principal designers attributed the high quality of the Finnish architectural profession. In the design process, the role of architectural design is significant for success. The importance of other areas of design and the smooth operation of cooperation cannot be underestimated either.
