Helsinki University of Technology | Master's thesis(2006) Valtonen, Mikko JohannesDemand supply chain management has become an important focus of competitive advantage for industrial companies, particularly in industries with a high rate of change in the business environment. For companies making tangible goods, implementing logistical service classes is a way to fulfill variety of service needs. Designing and managing delivery process in a globally operating Finnish manufacturing company was studied this thesis. The research problem of the study was: How to design and manage delivery process in a multi logistical service class environment of a company producing environmental measurement equipment? Key management issues and development frameworks were reviewed. Novel framework of analyzing planning and execution failures root causes we created based on the literature study. The research method used was a case study research combined with benchmarks analysis. The data collection methods used were interviews and discussions with the case company's representatives, and qualitative and quantitative analysis of the case company's operations performance. During the case analysis it was recognized that the demand in the environmental measurement equipment industry is fundamentally unpredictable with high demand variations, high sales margins, high product variety and short manufacturing lead times. As a result, a demand supply chain and delivery process in the industrial measurement equipment industry should be designed to be market-responsive in order to avoid lost sales and inventory costs. Several development potentials were located and corresponding recommendations for action were provided. Market-responsive delivery process model for large scale lots logistical service class was developed to be implemented in the case company.
