Text-based games and the mind: Representing the phenomenology of conscious sensory experience through a computer role-playing game

It feels like something to be a conscious being, and describing the subjective nature of that something is challenging. This artistic research project explores representing conscious sensory experience through the interaction structures of a text-based game. The game, Martaanvuo, was produced using an artistic research methodology, where theory informs artistic work and artistic work informs theoretical questioning. The process of creating the game led to identifying interesting patterns in how conscious beings interact with their surrounding world, some of which were implemented and experimented with in the game. The game serves as a deconstruction of conscious sensory experience, generating new viewpoints and questions about how the mind seems to work.
