- Finding the most suitable customer onboarding solution for an energy company
School of Science | Master's thesis(2024-10-03) Knuuttila, LassiKnow Your Customer (KYC) processes are important for banks and financial institutions to verify that their services aren't used illicitly, such as in money laundering or terrorist financing. KYC processes are also used in other types of companies as part of their onboarding process in order to make sure that for example, the new customer's financial situation will not cause problems on paying their invoices. This thesis aims to find the most suitable customer onboarding solution for an energy company Company X. Currently their Nordic Business-to-Business bulk fuel customers are onboarded manually by Company X personnel. The company is looking for an automated process that gathers information about the customer, such as credit reports and sanction list screening data to one place where the personnel can review the data and either accept or deny the customer application. The outcome of the study was that most of the commercially available onboarding solutions were not targeted towards the needs that Company X has. Only Signicat Mint showed potential with its no-code workflow builder that has templates for the required background checks, but since the platform was too new and lacked support for more complex logic, an in-house solution was suggested instead. This solution, like Company X's other Web services, relies on a microservice that handles the communication between Company X's internal services and external data sources to gather information about the customer and create the related resources in Company X's services if the customership was approved. The microservice could also host onboarding for other customer types in the future. While this thesis focused on automating the process of becoming a customer, some further studies could be made on effective ways of walking the new customer through the Company X Web services, monitoring customer behaviour during and after onboarding, and finally, using AI in analyzing customers' documents. - Helsingin seudun liikenne -kuntayhtymän ja Singaporen julkisen liikenteen matkakortinlukijoiden käytettävyys
Perustieteiden korkeakoulu | Bachelor's thesis(2016-12-20) Thor-Touch, Henri - Increasing User Understanding in Agile Software Development Projects with Design Practices
Perustieteiden korkeakoulu | Master's thesis(2020-05-19) Thor-Touch, HenriModern software development aims to produce valuable digital solutions by benefiting from customer- and user-centred agility. These can be supported by design practices, with which user understanding can be deepened. The goal of this thesis was to study how design practices can help small companies to increase their user understanding in agile software development projects. The empirical study was conducted as an insider action research. In this study, four design practices were tested: semi-structured interviews, user stories, scenarios, and prototyping. The four design practices helped to increase user understanding, by explaining who the users are, why they use the product, and how they use it. Semi-structured interviews helped to discover users’ values and motivations to use the current and future versions of the product. User stories allowed for creative thinking and writing of perceived user needs in a clear sentence. Scenarios described realistic stories of users. The stories gave details of the user, their interactions, circumstances, goals, and environment. Prototyping was used alongside the other three design practices to help the users feel and test the product. Testing the product in real context allowed for spontaneous idea creation for system improvement. The results of this thesis indicate that a small company could use semi-structured interviews, user stories, scenarios, and prototyping to increase user understanding in agile software development projects. Increasing user understanding requires careful selection of design practices. The design practices should provide detailed information about who the users are, what their needs and motivations are, and how they would use a product. - Training Machine Learning Models for E-sports Spatiotemporal Time Series Forecasting
School of Science | Master's thesis(2024-11-18) Tarpila, IlmariMachine learning in esports shows great promise due to the rising interest in the phenomenon and the specificity of the data available. This study explores the untapped potential of spatiotemporal game-state prediction by applying machine learning techniques to predict the future position of a player in a match of League of Legends, a popular esports title. The research involved a comprehensive background study, data processing, feature selection, model training, and results visualization. The developed models demonstrated the ability to predict future player positions with a reasonable degree of accuracy. However, further work is required to enhance model performance and address data rights issues that may arise. The study highlights the importance of data quality and availability, calling for more official datasets from game publishers to support continued research in this burgeoning field.
