- Evaluation of change and development initiatives in a sales organisation
School of Engineering | Master's thesis(2010) Tarvainen, VesaPurpose: The purpose of this research is to offer understanding about (1) how to carry forward the idea initiated by an employee to form a successful project and (2) how the change and development projects can be managed better. Different perceptions between management and the idea initiators about the ideas and projects will create challenges during and after the projects/programmes. In the long run this will affect unwillingness to expose the ideas. In this thesis these different perceptions and their effects are examined. Method: The study is carried out as a case study consisting of three cases. Data was gathered through 13 interviews, informal discussions, and pre-study and from documented material. Each case was analysed individually after which a cross-case analysis was carried out. The case study approach was selected to bring support to the implicit conjectures about the challenges the change and development projects face in the target organisation. Results: The leading results of this study show that the idea initiators were left a feeling that their idea was either not completely comprehended or paid attention to. Common challenges in all three cases were considered to be inadequate communication, insufficient follow-up of the results and getting/keeping the resources for the projects. Suggestions: The suggestions are divided into three categories by their effects. In a short time span the organisation should concentrate on better and clearer presentation material and management's responsibility as a customer for the projects. Middle-term suggestions lay stress on behavioural matters; respecting, listening, understanding, but also on better management of the project portfolio. For long term it is advised to build active idea generation structures and working methods by expanding the individual communication networks inside the company, widening the expertise and increasing the cooperation.
