Insinööritieteiden korkeakoulu | Bachelor's thesis(2013-04-24) Sundberg, Anton - Risk analysis of high pressure water mist system piping for safe return to port vessels
Insinööritieteiden korkeakoulu | Master's thesis(2017-12-11) Sundberg, AntonSafe Return to Port (SRtP) regulations state that for a ship’s safe return to port under its own propulsion after a fire or flooding casualty that does not exceed the casualty threshold, certain systems have to remain operational in the remaining parts of the ship. Idea behind SRtP is that in case of casualty, ship is seen as her best lifeboat and evacuation is to be avoided as long as feasibly possible. SRtP regulations are valid for passenger ships constructer on or after 1st of July 2010 and having length of 120 m or more or having three or more main vertical fire zones. One of the systems that has remain operational in the remaining parts of the ship during safe return port is ship’s fixed fire- extinguishing system. Majority of the cruise ships built after July 2010 are equipped with a high pressure water mist (HPWM) system as a ship’s fixed fire-extinguishing system. The aim of this thesis is to find possible risks in HPWM piping design for SRtP vessels and create mitigation controls for those using risk analysis. Piping in a context of this thesis is considered to cover the whole system except electrical cabling. Risk analysis is done as per International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) approved Formal Safety Assessment (FSA) guidelines in co-operation with Marioff Corporation Oy and Meyer Turku Shipyard. Risk analysis revealed few risks, and risk control options to mitigate those risks were recommended to the decision makers based on cost benefit assessment.
