School of Engineering | Master's thesis(2011) Smolander, MiiaIn this thesis the study subject was water balance in a drained peatland forest Sattasuo in Rovaniemi. The water balance was assessed based on on-site measurements and modelling with hydrological FEMMA model, and uncertainties concerning measurements and modelling are highlighted. Also the impacts of forest management practices are studied, and this is done through literature and model simulations. As a result the water balance of Sattasuo was defined based on both measurements and modelling. Both ways were important, because by comparing them it is possible to evaluate the accuracy of the measurements and the fitting of the model results in the study site. Based on the results, runoff is the most significant water balance component, and its share of the rainfall water is about one half. Tree stand transpiration and canopy interception are both a little less than one fifth, and the sum of understory and snow cover evaporation is also about the same. The residual term of the water balance is the change in water storage. Based on the model simulations, forest management practices affect the water balance of Sattasuo. Stand thinning reduced tree stand transpiration, which caused rise in the groundwater level, and runoff increased. Ditch network maintenance, on the other hand, improved the drainage situation and the groundwater level dropped, transpiration increased and runoff decreased. In conclusion, the role of transpiration in a water balance is important, at least in Sattasuo case. In the future it would be necessary to be able to generalize the results so that it would be possible to make more precise operation guidelines to peatland forests in common. By achieving that it could be possible to reduce the environmental impacts of peatland forestry.
