  • Adding wireless networking capabilities to fiber-optic alarm devices

    The objective of this work is to add wireless networking capabilities to existing fiberoptic alarm devices. Currently alarm devices are calibrated and analyzed via lightning sensitive serial cables. Devices are often located in remote areas, and require time consuming on-site visits from maintenance staff. In this work wireless technology, especially the IEEE 802.11b/g standard is first introduced. Then requirements for the wireless integration are documented. Based on the requirements, solution is designed, implemented and tested. Solution contains a working alarm device with wireless networking capabilities, and a PC application for controlling the alarm device. Users can now calibrate and analyze alarm devices over a network. It is recommended that field tests for the solution are organized next.
