- Discovering value proposition and solutions for mobile coupons
School of Science | Master's thesis(2012) Pomoell, JonasAs the number and intelligence of mobile devices, especially smartphones, has increased, the creation of new services has become possible. Coupons, as a thriving market scheme, are one of such services applicable to be used with mobile devices. In this study, the objective was to identify value proposition of mobile coupons, discover possible mobile coupon solutions and map the value proposition with the solutions. The study was performed as series of interviews of marketing experts to discover company values, consumers to discover consumer values and finally card and coupon experts to discover possible mobile coupon solutions. The value proposition of a mobile coupon solution would be to have increased possibility to target marketing, to have easier and more efficient way to distribute and handle coupons and to provide more accurate statistics of consumer behaviour. Moreover, mobile coupon solution must perform responsibly and trustworthy from customer perspectives. These value propositions are delivered in different magnitude depending on the mobile coupon solution. Altogether five mobile coupon solutions were identified: (1) unredeemable coupon usable various times, (2) cash back coupon, (3) coupon with changing code identifying validity, (4) coupon with barcode displayed on phone screen and (5) coupon that is redeemed as part of mobile payment authorization. The solutions can be grouped into two categories, first group containing solutions 1, 3 and 4 and the second solutions 2 and 5. Whereas the strength of the first category is in the consumer values, such as the perception of benefit received, the second category supports the company values better with increased reporting and statistics. Altogether, the mobile coupon solution enables companies to target their marketing more precisely and to receive more information of company customers whilst for consumer the value realizes as easier and more efficient coupon handling.
