- CSRD-driven sustainability reporting & business transformation
School of Business | Master's thesis(2024) Pirinen, AntonStarting financial year 2024, European companies are obligated to start reporting their annual sustainability figures according to the new European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) introduced with Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The main objective of this thesis is to study Finnish companies preparing for CSRD compliant reporting, and to create a framework that identifies the most significant drivers that explain organizations’ ability to transform to comply with the requirements. The empirical part of this study is conducted via qualitative theme interviews during the first half of the year 2023. The interviewees were sustainability leaders who are responsible for overseeing this transformation in their respective companies in Finland. To prepare for the interviews and to validate the findings, ESG consultants’ perceptions of the new regulation, and their experiences in coaching companies regarding it are also examined for supportive analysis. The results indicate that there is significant variety in organizations’ capabilities to conduct this transformation, and that the major differences between organizations can be categorized behind five main axes: 1) stage of integration between financial and sustainability reporting, 2) capability of IT systems, 3) quality of sustainability data, 4) expertise in the organization and 5) authenticity of sustainability in the organization. Furthermore, the results imply that transformation into CSRD compliance demands a significant shift in business strategy, organizational structure, and operational priorities to affected companies, with demands to acquire new capabilities in IT systems, human resources, and process transformation from separated financial and sustainability reports into the integrated reporting process. - Possibilities of leveraging big data and cloud computing in industrial maintenance
