School of Business | Master's thesis(1975) Paajanen, Tuula - The changing water treatment chemical industry: identifying opportunities in Chinese and Indian megacities
School of Science | Master's thesis(2012) Ollikainen, PetriThe aim of this thesis is to identify the key water management challenges in Chinese and Indian megacities, and consequent opportunity implications for a water treatment chemical company. In addition, because decentralized treatment systems and membrane technologies may affect the way how the water infrastructure is going to be built in Chinese and Indian megacities and even cause the whole water treatment chemical industry to change, this thesis aims to analyze also how water treatment chemical companies can adapt to the potential change. In order to achieve above objectives, a theoretical analysis framework is constructed that will be used as a basis for the analyses. The action-analytic approach is chosen in the thesis as the main research approach, and quantitative and qualitative data are gathered by exploiting both primary and secondary data sources. Research methods include literature survey, expert interviews, observing strategic planning meetings either by being present physically or through a webcast, and discussions in tutoring sessions. Based on the findings of this thesis, water supply infrastructure development is relatively mature in Chinese megacities but wastewater treatment is lagging behind the growth of urbanization and the development of the water supply service. Because water supply infrastructure development is relatively mature, the best opportunities in terms of new water projects are in the less saturated wastewater treatment, water reuse and seawater desalination sectors. On the other hand, water and wastewater infrastructure in Indian megacities is characterized not only by inefficiencies but it is also underdeveloped and old. Therefore, rehabilitation of old infrastructure and the creation of new infrastructure will drive the demand for new water projects both at water and wastewater sides. It was also found out that whereas decentralized wastewater treatment is not a significant trend at least in megacity environment, POU- and POE-solutions is a trend as a decentralized solution on the water supply side. However, whereas decentralized treatment systems are not enough to cause the water treatment chemical industry to change, low pressure membrane technologies are. Consequently, water treatment chemical industry is on an intermediating change trajectory, and firms must shift the business focus from bulk-chemicals of coagulants and flocculants towards variety of specialty chemicals. - Rikkidioksidin poistaminen rikkihappotehtaan poistokaasuista, teknis-taloudellinen esitutkimus
