    Interaction design for browser-based mobile multimedia applications

    If a user had the possibility to watch the latest television news from the mobile phone, or listen to the news on the radio, or read text news with the mobile, what would he or she choose? And what about entertainment content? This was the primary study question in Podracing project. A prototype was created for usability studies. Finnish media broadcasters provided constantly newest up-to-date content which was available to users through our client. Browser based User Interface was implemented, in which presentation of information can he separated from program logic and retrieval of data. It simplifies support for multiple target devices. 3G and WLAN are not yet available to users in all situations, where users would especially feel the need to access current entertainment and information content to kill time. Data transfer speed and serving clients when Internet connection is not available are major challenges for browser based clients. Different media formats and delivery methods were researched in user trials in addition to usability studies. As a result, mobile terminals were used in such a variety of situations that any single media format and delivery method was not able to fulfil all needs. Furthermore, just surfing around or viewing an arbitrary program flow seems not be enough. Against previous results mobile television use was much focused. Mobile television should offer something more and exploit whole variety of available technologies, just a television isn't enough.
