- Implementing and maintaining continuous accessibility in e-commerce development
Perustieteiden korkeakoulu | Master's thesis(2024-08-19) Mäkipää, MaxIn an increasingly digitalised world, where services are progressively moving online and physical service points are being reduced, it is crucial to ensure that digital services are simple and satisfying to use for everyone, regardless of their individual needs and abilities. To promote equality in digital services and improve accessibility, new regulations will soon take effect in the European Union, requiring organisations with consumer-facing e-commerce to comply with accessibility standards. According to existing research, to support the implementation of accessible digital services, accessibility must be considered early and continuously throughout the project life cycle. This underscores the need for accessibility expertise and the establishment of practices that support accessibility in e-commerce development. The objective of this thesis was to examine accessibility practices, key supporting factors, and the challenges faced by digital practitioners in e-commerce development. A single-case study was conducted on a Nordic transportation company actively developing B2C digital sales channels. The study involved seven semi-structured interviews with employees in various roles to explore the company's approach to accessibility, role-specific responsibilities, perceptions of key accessibility-supporting factors, and the challenges encountered. The study identified seven essential accessibility-related practices and key factors facilitating continuous accessibility implementation. Additionally, various challenges, from balancing diverse user needs in a single solution to understanding the user needs behind accessibility requirements, were observed. Based on the study results, the thesis presents practical implications that aim to guide organisations in enhancing accessibility in their e-commerce channels, emphasizing practices such as integrating accessibility into continuous development, regularly collaborating with accessibility experts and users with disabilities, and fostering organisation-wide commitment to accessibility. To conclude, this research provides insights into the perceived benefits of the identified accessibility practices and presents common challenges organisations may encounter in improving accessibility in their digital sales channels. - Managing the eco-social impact of an IT consultancy
Perustieteiden korkeakoulu | Master's thesis(2023-05-15) Nuutinen, JoonasThis thesis studies the ecological and social impacts of IT consulting. The thesis aims to answer two research questions: 1) How can an IT consultancy assess and improve its eco-social impact while making economic impact? and 2) How can an IT consultancy communicate its eco-social impact internally and externally? The thesis is a qualitative case study of two Finnish IT consultancies, Columbia Road and Futurice. A literature review examines general business sustainability management practices and scrutinises two impact assessment tools: the B Impact Assessment and the Upright net impact model. Case interviews chart the existing sustainability practices at Columbia Road and Futurice. These practices are critically analyzed based on literature, expert interviews, and benchmarking. The analysis is combined with a workshop to identify concrete actions that Columbia Road and Futurice could take to improve their eco-social impact. The analysis shows that while Columbia Road recognises the importance of business sustainability and pays special attention to certain sustainability areas, its approach is not yet holistic. Overall, Columbia Road’s sustainability performance is limited by a lack of a strong CSR organization, systematic integration of sustainability into core business, and explicit sustainability targets. Futurice’s sustainability approach is more advanced but still lacks many of the concrete processes required to implement the sustainability aspirations in practice. The results present a sustainability framework for IT consultancies and specific suggestions for Columbia Road and Futurice. IT consultancies should perform a materiality assessment, integrate sustainability into their strategy, establish explicit sustainability processes, set rules for working with controversial industries, identify sustainable business opportunities, manage the net impact of their client portfolio, establish a sustainability team, promote a fair data economy, establish ethical guidelines, commit to emission reduction, and publicly disclose data about their sustainability performance. - Web-based Regression for Predicting Food Campaign Sales
