- Developing a cost-efficient manufacturing method for the large-scale seat rings
Insinööritieteiden korkeakoulu | Master's thesis(2014-12-15) Niskanen, JuhoThe master’s thesis was done for Metso Automation’s valve factories in Finland and China. Firstly, the thesis introduces the reader to the construction of a butterfly valve and explains what its purpose in pipelines is. In addition, the design of a seat ring is presented and a basic sealing mechanism is explained throughout. Some sealing techniques from competitors are also presented. Afterwards, the thesis examines the price formation of the butterfly valves; especially the price formation of a U-shaped seat ring. It is revealed that a rapid price growth in large-scale seat rings (sizes above 28 inch) is a clear problem. It is commonly known that the manufacturing method changes between sizes 24 and 28 inch. During the thesis project, price formation analyses of different valve series were conducted. In addition, analyses about the proportion of the seat ring cost from the total cost of a valve are done. Manufacturing methods in Shanghai and Vantaa are researched throughout. Market analysis about the demand and the sales between different industries are taken into consideration. By using these market analyses, a potential sales growth is calculated assuming that the seat ring prices can be decreased. The research section reveals potential new manufacturing methods such as 3D-printing, metal spinning, insert technologies and manufacturing the forgings to near net-shape. The goal of the thesis is to find reasons for the high seat ring prices and to find a more costefficient manufacturing method for the large-scale seat rings. Based on the small-scale seat ring manufacturing, which is the most cost-efficient method at the moment, a new seat ring prices are calculated for the large-scale seat rings. These new prices are used to calculate potential savings if the manufacturing method of the small-scale seat rings could be expanded to the large-scale seat ring sizes. The same values are also used in an evaluation of two best selected manufacturing methods. In the evaluation part, pay-back periods are calculated and based on these finding, a proposal how to re-organize the seat ring manufacturing is given to Metso. - Konepajan jätteiden käsittely
