Societal changes, political climate, digitalization and new technological innovations are developing the ways we interact with each other and our cultural heritage. Our consumption patterns are transformed and shaped by smart devices – yet our perceptions of museums remain antiquated. Thus, the question is, what kind of meanings we attach to museums in the future? What kind of concepts can we develop to reach this goal? Museums have been doing excellent work in preserving our national and cultural heritage, but as a side effect, we have collectively typecast them as repositories for the past. The report exhibits foresight into innovative opportunities to be seized by The Museum in the future both conceptual and practical levels. Group of IDBM students from Aalto University collaborated with National Museum of Finland. Students developed concepts for future Museum of Cultures in two multidisciplinary teams. The represented disciplines are business, technology and design. Even though the report focuses on the Museum of Cultures, the results are scalable to address the future of museums in general.

Personal branding for designers - Creating my own design brand
    (2019) Niskala, Sarianna
School of Arts, Design and Architecture | Master's thesis
Building a personal brand touches all designers at some point in their careers. However, personal branding is mostly discussed in marketing and business studies and has not been largely examined or researched in the design field. Moreover, until now, personal branding has not been used as a tool for designers to build their own personal design brands. The purpose of this master thesis is to examine what personal branding is, explore different brand management theories and tools, plus build my own personal brand as a designer. This thesis also includes a collection of products for the brand, where my personal signature style and characteristic handprint are explored further. The brand products range from prints to jewellery and interior products. This thesis is a combination of theory, practice, artistic vision and design exploration. The aim of this thesis is to study personal branding as a concept, introduce how to map out one’s designer identity, create a personal brand based on said identity and lastly, design products for the brand. My goal is to find out how designers can benefit from personal branding and how they can gain an advantage from it when creating a design brand of their own. The first part briefly recaps branding theory and introduces the theoretical framework of the thesis. Second part is reserved for mapping my designer identity and building a brand of my own by using different branding and identity creation tools. In the production part of the thesis, I design my own branded products in various categories of design, all in accordance with the brand rules and values that I have created. The last part also showcases the created collections of brand products and is a further exploration of my own style, ideas and values. In my thesis, I want to describe the wide-ranging, upscale and explorative process of a young Finnish designer examining her own designer identity thought branding and finding her own way in the design field. Finally, I hope this thesis can encourage also other young designers to take interest in personal branding and lead to them to take the deliberate steps in consciously building their own brands.
