School of Chemical Engineering | Master's thesis(2011) Naumanen, JussiConcern about climate change has arisen great interest in quantifying greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon footprint has been established as the way to quantify and report greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon footprint refers to the amount of greenhouse gases, which are related to human caused production and consumption. Carbon footprint of product refers to greenhouse gas emissions, which are formed during the product's whole life cycle. The objective of this master's thesis was to develop carbon footprint calculations of a product. The goal was to calculate a carbon footprint of a product, recognize the most essential emission sources and define the ways to decrease carbon footprint of a product. The electricity consumption of the printing house was also part of the research. The goal was to determine how much electricity is needed in production of a product and how the energy consumption is divided inside the property. With all the information gathered in the research, also product carbon footprint calculator was developed. The largest emission source, during the production of a product, was paper manufacturing. The second largest emission sources were actions inside the printing house, which included energy consumption, bought fuel and employee commuting. The most effective way of decreasing carbon footprint in a printing house is to use papers, which have a smaller carbon footprint. If this is not possible, the focus should be in energy efficiency of the printing house. In this particular research, the energy consumed by the real estate was enormous. This is recommended to be the main focus when finding energy efficiency improvements inside the printing house. - Ympäristönäkökulmat painotuotteen valmistusprosessissa
