    In this thesis we explore the use of classrooms and lecture halls in Aalto University. The focus is in the technology used and how it affects the usability of the classroom. We also mention some other characters that affect the room usability. The study consists of a literature survey and an empirical study. In the literature survey we introduce the methods and devices used in the empirical study. Thus the empirical study is the main issue in this thesis and it consists of many different parts, such as observation, interviews, use diaries, surveys, activity logging and expert evaluations. The range of methods is kept this wide because the topic is rich and diverse. Also there are only few former studies made, so we try to set up a base for future research with this broad set of methods. The results show that the users' needs are not fulfilled with the existing technical solutions. For example, every classroom has more presentation technology than used by teachers. Many units combined with careless user interface design result in an interface that is difficult to handle. This causes use problems and underutilisation of the system. On the other hand the users tend to blame themselves for the problems and hesitate to demand better interfaces, so the problem remains. Based on the results, we designed and conducted an alternative user interface for the touch screen. It reduced usability problems in the tested lecture hall. The results are also illustrated with personas, scenarios and user requirements so they can be used for future projects.
