Informaatio- ja luonnontieteiden tiedekunta | Bachelor's thesis(2008) Mutka, Sanna - The set-up of multiple business models in a project-based firm
School of Science | Master's thesis(2010) Mutka, SannaThe distinctive characteristics of project-based business and the trend of servitization make the business logic of a project-based firm complex. Indeed, project-based firms do not deploy only one business model, but they have multiple business models on both the firm and project level. Recently, the deployment of multiple business models have been realized but prior research has paid less attention to the interrelations of these multiple business models and their development over time. This study aims to understand what kind of set-up the multiple business models of a project-based firm constitute. The research was conducted as an embedded case study. A case company from the mining and metallurgical industry and five case projects within the firm were chosen. Altogether 20 interviews on both the firm and project level were done. The business models of both the firm and the projects were analyzed using a framework including eight business model elements. The study points out that the case firm has two business models: an established, technology-based business model and an extended solution-based business model. The established model emphasizes the delivery of equipment whereas the extended model emphasizes the process. Two of the project level business models were interrelated with the technology-based business model and two with the solution-based business model. However, the projects were not only direct subordinates of the firm's business model but they also had a bottom-up effect on it. This was the case especially with the projects interrelating with the extended business model. Those projects included a new offering whereas the projects interrelated with the established business model included an old, standard offering. Finally, one of the project level business models with turnkey nature was mostly disconnected from both of the firm's business models. The project represented a new way of doing business, and it might create a completely new business model for the firm or remain as an individual case. All in all, due to the two-way interaction between the firm and project level business models the firm should manage the relationships between business models in order to find the best way to operate. Indeed, emerging development of business models should not be neglected due to the conflict arising from the dominant logic of firm. The research contributes to existing literature by enhancing the knowledge of both business models and project-based firms. Indeed, the study opens up the logic of a project-based firm, first by conceptual analysis of the topic and second by exploring the topic empirically. - That is not how we brought you up: how is the strategy of a project formed?
