Since the data transfer speeds and the resolutions of the displays have improved, the quality of image and video files has improved. Therefore, their sizes have increased. When several users request the same file at the same time, it is hardly a good idea to waste the transfer capacity by sending the same content as several copies, separately for each user. In this thesis this problem is studied and solved by multicast, where the data is sent once and it can reach several receivers simultaneously. Even if ail the receivers are not watching the broadcast in real time, the amount of the data transferred can be reduced by using intelligent proxy caches. The service providers in the Internet have traditionally not enabled multicast. They seem to fear the problems that multicast might cause. In this work architecture and a prototype implementation are designed to easily provide multicast in the network of a company or a service provider. Global support for multicast is not required. The main goal is to reduce the amount of data transferred in local area networks or Internet connections. Test results show that the proposed solution works properly and that the transfer capacity of the network can be used more efficiently. Some alternative architecture is also considered. The shortcomings and limitations of the prototype are also studied and some possible ideas for future work are proposed.
