Difficulties and Issues with Product Master Data Management: Case Study in the Pharmaceutical Wholesale and Retail Industry

With an increasing amount of IT systems and data being incorporated and handled by companies across different industries, it is vital that they understand the concept of master data and master data management. Data is something only the focal company owns and properly used can become one of the most important assets and drivers of the company. This thesis describes the difficulties and issues companies have when managing product master data and how these can be solved and remedied. This study used a case study research methodology combined with a theoretical literature review around the concepts of product master data and data maintenance. The main material for the case study was 12 semi-structured interviews. The results of the analysis are presented through four distinct areas of systems, processes, responsibilities & ownership and information quality. These four areas were discovered in the literature review and were further highlighted to be key topics during the interviews. The findings of this study show that as important as technology and IT systems are viewed in companies they should be seen as something which should be easy to use and enable the processes related to MDM. Managers should focus much more on the processes, responsibilities and roles related to data handling and that these, along with the flow of information are well defined. Management must also focus on having an ownership structure in place with appropriate communication. Every facet of the data should have some type of owner or data steward in place that carries responsibility over the data and ensures that data management processes are followed.
