- A process perspective to project sales and delivery in a project-based firm

The uniqueness, discontinuity and complexity of project business create challenges to describe the processes of global cross-functional matrix organization. This study was conducted to create a process perspective on project business of one global organization. This study is aimed to increase visibility and transparency from a process perspective over the activities, operations and processes conducted in the studied organization. On the other hand this kind of unawareness created by the fundamentals of project business can introduce potential areas for improvements. The process describing focus of this study was concentrated on project sales to delivery process, but the concept of process development and management was escalated to concern the processes of the whole organization. The theoretical base of this research was established on fundamentals of process development and management, and project business. The entities of both main topics were addressed against the business activities conducted in the empirically studied organization. The empirical part was established through interviews and workshop meetings with employees of the organization related to project sales to delivery process. In total 46 interviews and meetings were conducted during this study. The empirical data was collected from the end of 2011 till spring 2012. As result of this research a comprehensive description of the project sales to delivery process was created. The process description entailed the essential phases during the process with responsibilities and interdependences between different functions. The most critical factors during delivery projects were managing the interfaces between functions, cooperating throughout the process and compatibility assurance between offering and deliverables. A framework of architecture elements created in this study for process management enables the organization to develop their processes.
