Perustieteiden korkeakoulu | Bachelor's thesis(2019-09-24) Mason, Jessica - Transforming a traditional enterprise application into a mobile solution: a user-centered approach
Perustieteiden korkeakoulu | Master's thesis(2021-12-14) Mason, JessicaThe popularity and wide-spread use of mobile phones has been on the rise since their invention. So much so, that enterprises are increasingly looking at mobile solutions to complement the traditional desktop ones. One of these companies is Ramboll, who have an interest in transforming their currently desktop usable software Circle so that it is usable on mobile. The aim of this thesis is to explore how such a transformation from desktop to mobile can be done in a user-centered way. This is done from three different perspectives. Examining the technological methods for the transformation, exploring some of the inherent capabilities and boundaries of designing for mobile, and discovering how this can be done in a user-centered way. The results of this thesis not only attempt to answer what the best technological method would be in this case, but also go further to try and generalize how could one begin to make decisions about the method in general. Regarding the design for mobile, this thesis recognizes several unique aspects and gives examples on how they can be considered in designing a mobile solution. Lastly, the results highlighted some key ways in which users can be included in the design process, which were also successfully carried out during the research. Together, the answers to these questions build an idea of how to transform a traditional enterprise application into a mobile solution with a user-centered approach.
