Master's thesis(2012) Lukkarinen, SaraWhen scheduling bus timetables the realized measurements are used to define running times. Based on these running times timetables and the passing times for bus stops are created. At Helsinki Region Transport at the moment median is usually used for defining the running times. There has been a need to research should there be another statistical variable for defining. In this thesis has researched how the running times should be defined and what kind of factors has an effect on running times. Starting points for the inspections were to minimize the waiting of the passenger at the bus stops and to create realisable timetables. A questionnaire study was made for ten operators around the world. In the research part of the work ten HRT bus lines were examined for their present situation, special notion was made for deviation and on-time performance of the certain lines. After the current situation of the lines was examined the new running times were defined for these ten lines using the different variables and the results were compared to the data in use. According to the study made the bus being ahead the schedule is much more harmful for the passenger compared to being late especially when the headway is great. This should be considered when defining the running times. At the time on the lines studied the number of departures being ahead of schedule is reasonable small. But when considering the deviations of the lines and the amount of the minutes drove ahead and late of the scheduled times can be said that in some of the lines of the region has such considerable deviations that they will cause unpunctual timetables. These kinds of timetables can cause time loss for the passengers and will probably lead to the decrease of passenger demand when the reliability will diminish. The problem of the great deviations cannot be solved with the tools of defining the running times. The causes of deviation have to be defined and there s a need to concentrate to better the reliability for example increasing the amount of holding points. As the result of these thesis, the 40 percentile is been recommended to be used for defining the running times in HRT. This percentile will take into the consideration the bad influence of driving ahead of schedule but will keep the timetables realizable and will prevent great lateness. - Pyöräilykypärän käytön ja käyttöpakon vaikutukset
