School of Chemical Engineering | Master's thesis(2012) Liukkonen, RikuThis study was conducted in order to gain an understanding of the factors influencing wear resistance on hard coated coater blades. The scope of the study also focused on the effect of blade wear on the quality of coated paper surfaces. This knowledge can be used for developing improved blade materials. The literature review indicated that the wear mechanism was abrasion. Pigment particles and fillers were suggested to the wear particles in the paper coating process. A different wear environment was discussed where dry edge areas on the blade caused higher wear. Worn blades were examined and analysed under the microscope in order to discover their microstructure and factors resulting in good wear resistance. A thermal camera was employed to analyses the wear environment. Worn blades were compared to the process and the quality information gathered to discover the influence of wear on quality. The results indicate that the evenness of the hard coating microstructure and the grain size of the tungsten carbide are the most significant factors affecting the resistance of blades to wear. Conclusions on the ideal microstructure are made. In addition, guidelines on further research are given.
