    The amount of personal multimedia data such as images, videos and audio tracks together with contextual data such as location information, calendar events and tags have grown rapidly as digital cameras, smart phones and digital music players have become widely used. For storing and managing this multimedia data, PC' s with the Windows operating system is a popular platform. Based on an existing Windows PC application for personal multimedia data management a need has been identified to design and create a more generic, shareable and extendable data access layer that could serve many different Windows PC multimedia applications. The existing application uses a proprietary database for storing the multimedia data and it is not possible to further develop it. This thesis studies the different technologies and designs that are available for implementing a shared multimedia object store on the Windows PC platform. Requirements originating from the existing PC application and requirements defined by the new applications lay as a basis for the design decisions taken. The design for a complete multimedia data management system is presented and the implementation based on this design is analyzed compared to the original requirements.
