    Data Utilization in the Enterprise
    (2019-06-18) Friman, Jooel
    Perustieteiden korkeakoulu | Master's thesis
Enterprises collect more data than ever. Still capturing value from these existing data masses can be difficult. Companies most valuable data, master data, can easily go underutilized. Development in computer science has enabled technologies for utilization data such as data mining, artificial intelligence and analysis tools. Speed of technological change gives possibilities for enterprises to utilize their data resources. Nevertheless, organizational and contextual barriers are the ones that hinder the use of master data and data in general. The motivation for this thesis is to find a way to utilize enterprise master data sets for sustained competitive advantage. The literature review focuses on contextual data quality, data-driven organizational practises and structures and strategic opportunities that data provides for sustained competitive advantage. This review is a base from which the research framework is formulated. This research studies on how data can be used to build capabilities, to develop automated value increasing processes and to develop organizational learning and innovation. The results suggest that to utilize data more effectively, enterprises should build boundary resources internally between business units to build a shared understanding of how data can be utilized. Enterprises have to dissolve contextual data quality barriers and build technological and learning capabilities to make data usable for knowledge workers. This thesis provides a framework for assessing contextual data quality, building data to knowledge resources and understanding differences between managers and knowledge workers. Even though research is done in one Finnish knowledge-intensive enterprise, many issues are shared between different organizational contexts. Using the model provided researcher, management and organizations can study utilization capabilities in contextual settings to gain sustained competitive advantage.
