Insinööritieteiden korkeakoulu | Master's thesis(2022-08-22) Lehto, VeeraAn increasing number of people live in cities and our lives are becoming more hectic, we need spaces where the air is a bit cleaner, the environment is a bit quieter and where we can relax. These spaces could be urban green spaces (UGSs) which are important in this ever-changing urbanising world. They are often considered important for urban areas and residents for a variety of reasons. They are found to improve the aesthetics of urban areas and provide relaxing places. Moreover, they provide nature, often improve biodiversity and function as air purifiers among other contributions. UGSs are also found to increase perceived safety and positive feeling happiness among their users. This thesis investigates how the residents perceive the UGSs in Vantaa, Finland. Vantaa is a growing and diverse city which aims to densify its built areas. The main objective is to discover how important the UGSs are for residents and how the residents perceive them. Moreover, the aim is to discover how the residents use the urban green spaces in Vantaa, where they prefer using them and on what kind of areas in Vantaa they are most often located. That is how the research questions of this study were invented. The questions are consisting of one main question and two sub-questions. The main research question is: “How do the residents experience the urban green spaces in Vantaa?” and the sub-questions are: (1) “How and for what purposes do residents use the urban green spaces in Vantaa?” and (2) “On what kind of areas are the favourite urban green spaces of the residents of Vantaa located?” The data was collected form the residents of Vantaa through a Maptionnaire survey which enables collecting spatial data. The results of this study show that the residents experience the UGSs in Vantaa in a positive way and as places for relaxing and conducting a variety of activities. Some people see them as places for socialising while others see them as places to distance themselves from other people.
