    Viimeisimpien markkina-arviointien mukaan maailmassa tulee olemaan 2,5 miljardia kännykkää vuoden 2006 loppuun mennessä. GSM-tekniikan esittelyn jälkeen sekä markkinat että teknologiat ovat edenneet valtavin harppauksin, mutta silti kannettavien laitteiden päätehtävä on puheen siirtäminen paikasta toiseen. Muut käyttötarkoitukset ovat vasta nyt tulossa markkinoille. Pikaviestintä, nettiselailu ja mitä erilaisemmat nettipalvelut hyödyntävät kannettavia päätteitä uusilla tavoilla ja tuoreimmat matkapuhelimet tukevatkin jo tilatietoisuutta. Tämä tilatietoisuus on laajentumassa yksinkertaisesta "vapaa/varattu" statuksesta myös enemmän muutakin tietoa (sijainti, kalenteri ja terveys) muille käyttäjille automaattisesti jakavaan toiminnallisuuteen, mikä johtaa väistämättä yksityisyyden menettämiseen. Luottamus voidaan nähdä yksityisyyden jakamisen esivaatimuksena, joten molempien helppo hallittavuus tulee olemaan olennainen osa käyttökokemusta, joka lopulta määrittää tuotteen hyväksyttävyyden käyttäjän silmissä. Tässä diplomityössä hyödynnetään Euroopan komission käynnistämän Mobilife tutkimusprojektin sovelluksia ja käyttäjäkeskeistä tuotekehitysprosessia, jonka käyttäjätestien tuloksista poimitaan suunnitteluperiaatteita luottamuksen ja yksityisyyden hallintaan tulevaisuuden tuotesuunnittelussa hyödynnettäviksi.
  • Usability guidelines for mobile touchscreen user interfaces

    The goal of this study is to identify the special characteristics of mobile touch screen usability. The aim was to create a set of usabillty guidelines for these special cases. The study presents a comparing review of existing guidelines on general high-level usability, mobile usability and user interfaces, touch-based user interfaces and different technological platforms. Expert practitioners in the field of mobile user interfaces were interviewed with a semi structured approach. The interview study was conducted by the researcher himself. From sorted findings, the goal was to find which factors affect the usability of a mobile touch screen interface the most. Combining the interview results and the review of the existing guidelines, a draft version of guidelines was presented. This set of knowledge was summarized in the form of design guidelines and sent back to the interviewed experts. They responded with comments and grades on relevance of each guideline. Every respondent answered that the set of guidelines would serve as a helpful tool for their or their colleagues' work. Based on the feedback, a revised set of 12 guidelines was written in imperative form. These conclusions are the original contribution of this study. With the help of this tool, a decent level of usability can better be achieved.
