    Managing a portfolio of information technology investments

    During periods of high economic growth companies tend to engage in demanding information technology investment schemes. Their ability to properly manage their information technology development portfolio is often hampered by insufficient commitment by business management as well as a lack of understanding of the costs and benefits of various investments. The research problem of this study is: "How should the business management of the case company optimally manage their current portfolio of information technology applications and new information technology projects?" The main objective of this study is to provide recommendations for the case company on managing their current portfolio of information technology applications. To support this objective the theoretical part of this study develops a general frameworks for information technology portfolio management. This is done based on a literature study and interviews. Key findigs of this study include that optimal information technology portfolio management requires thorough understanding of the real business impacts of IT investments, managerial involvement, as well as coountability by the information technology service providers. As set of analysis tools is provided to support the practical application of the findings.
