- Control architecture of optic fiber-draw process
Sähkötekniikan korkeakoulu | Master's thesis(2018-12-17) Pajunen, PetrusFiber optics industry has a critical role in the next generation mobile networks and future devices that require ubiquitous internet access. An optical fiber is a practical space-saving solution for data transfer in telecommunication networks. In addition, it provides significant speed for data transfer since light rays deliver the information through the fiber. The main research problems set for this thesis work are related to the production of optical fibers and the fiber manufacturing process control. A production line of the optical fiber cable is presented in detail and currently used process control system is described. A process model is created based on data samples from the running optical fiber-draw process. The process model describes the characteristics of the process. It has limitations in considered process-related parameters. The process control strategy is based on the closed-loop feedback of the process. Two variables of the process used for the process control criteria are the fiber diameter and the fiber tension. These properties of the product determine the quality of the optical fiber. As a result of this thesis, a linear multivariable process model and a process controller are designed to estimate the optic fiber-draw process. This knowledge will be used later for design work of more complex control architecture for the fiber-draw process. - Design of a 3D configuration model for electric motors
Insinööritieteiden korkeakoulu | Master's thesis(2014-11-24) Laukkarinen, ErkkaSynchronous motor is a tailor made product of ABB and its mechanical design can take up to several months of time. A need of simplified layout model of motor in the beginning of design process has emerged in the department of synchronous machines. Design work of synchronous machines is performed by utilizing computer aided design. Development of computer aided design software has enabled automated creation of 3D models. Applications, which create 3D models automatically, can be called also as 3D model configurators. The main objective of this thesis was to research, how 3D model configuring could be utilized in creation of layout models. 3D model configurator was to be created and implemented for selected synchronous motor types. Main dimension drawing of motor was also needed to be created based on the configured layout model. The available design tools for the task were CAD software NX 8 and I-Deas as well as PDM software Teamcenter. Different 3D modeling and assembly creation techniques were studied thoroughly. Also available design tools and their features were researched. Knowledge was gained by utilizing existing literature, interviews of experts and by experimenting. Geometric data exchange methods were discovered for utilization of I-Deas models and for ensuring smooth delivery of configured layout models. As a concrete result of this thesis, two separate 3D layout model configurators were created for selected synchronous motors. Modeling was performed in NX, but also multiple I-Deas models were utilized with the aid of STEP data exchange method. The configurable assembly was created in NX and a skeleton model was utilized to provide more robust method of constraining component models. Different user interfaces were researched and finally Options & Variants tool in Teamcenter was selected for this purpose. As a new configuration is created, user inputs values for options in Teamcenter. These option values define parameters for models in NX and also which component models are included in the configured structure. Created configurators proved to be effective in creating necessary layout models and main dimension drawings. - Revolutionizing business models – Analysis of product service systems in European bicycle industry
School of Business | Master's thesis(2024) Laukkarinen, ErkkaIn this thesis I focused on fulfilling a research gap, which exists in the empirical research of product service systems (PSS) in bicycle industry. The research provides practical examples of PSS in this field, makes the whole concept of PSS easier to understand, and defines the current status of PSS in the European bicycle industry. Moreover, this research studied the strategic ad-vantages and disadvantages of different PSS in bicycle industry on a general level and from a perspective of a Northern European bicycle manufacturer. Several different theoretical models and frameworks of PSS have been created by the academics, but the empirical research and practical examples are lacking behind the theoretical work. In the literature review, I studied the most common theoretical approaches of PSS and selected one model, which supported the research of PSS in the European bicycle industry. The selected model was Tukker’s PSS categorization model. This model provided a systematic approach for the research and presenting findings. Research method for defining current PSS in the European bicycle industry was qualitative archival research, which utilized public information from online sources, mainly company websites, annual reports and other digital publications. The research focused on bicycle manufacturers and service providers. In this research, varying practical examples of PSS were found for all categories of Tukker’s categorization model. Overall, it can be said that the involvement of bicycle manufacturers in service business is still rather limited, but the numerous service providers have made the bicycle industry extremely diverse from a perspective of service supply. The strategic potential of PSS in bicycle industry was researched with a single case study of a Northern European bicycle manufacturing company. This single case study included semi-structured interviews of seven case company representatives, who are professionals in bicycle industry. This research targeted at understanding, how the professionals of bicycle industry see the potential of product service systems, on a general level and especially from a perspective of manufacturer, if they would add certain services to their existing business. Eventually, interviewees were interested mainly in three service types: maintenance, leasing, and second-hand bicycle sales. Of these three, second-hand bicycle sales service stood out as the most potential service. - Sähköajoneuvon induktiivinen lataus
