Helsinki University of Technology | Master's thesis(2005) Lampinen, TuomoA new vocational education curriculum came to effect in Finland in 2000. The new curriculum brought a new teaching method, which is called learning at work. In this the student will spend a part of his or her course time studying at a work place. At the workplace the student will do the sort of work that is typical to the workplace and aids his or her learning of relevant skills as defined by the curriculum. Typically 20 out of the 120 study weeks that make up the whole course are spent at a workplace. This twenty weeks is divided into several parts. Learning at work has been seen as necessary in the modern society, which doesn't offer opportunities to young people to get first hand experience about working life otherwise. Learning at work is a joint effort of the student, the school and the workplace. A workplace tutor, a qualified person from the workplace, will take the responsibility for the student's learning and progress. This teaching method lets the student try out the theories learnt at school in practice. Integrating the personal experience gained from the workplace situations into learning is the main teaching method of learning at work. This also leads to cultural exchanges between school and workplace. This study looks into the current state of learning at work as a part of post-secondary education. The viewpoints of this study are those of work psychology and vocational training. The method used was a questionnaire sent to technical assistant students, their teachers and workplace tutors, all of whom had participated in workplace learning. One student was chosen from each class. The questionnaire was filled by the student, the teacher and the tutor. The questions were about careers choice, personal aptitudes, social skills, levels of professional skill and ability to improve those skills. From the study can be deducted that learning at the workplace fulfills the targets set in the curriculum, which are based on the effect of work experiences to learning. Learning at workplace gives the opportunity to use those technical applications which are in use in that workplace. Learning in an existing social and physical working environment is a valuable experience. There was good progress in all aspects which this study looked at from the points of view all the participants: the student, the teacher and the tutor. The most important finding of this study was the importance of the workplace tutor's positive attitude to the student and his or her progress. This is important for the student's learning experience and for the professional development of a future worker in a way that satisfies the needs of the workplace. - Using SPKI Certificates for Authorization in CORBA based Distributed Object-Oriented Systems
