- Re-imagining the fat narrative - and recognizing bias in the design process
School of Arts, Design and Architecture | Master's thesis(2023) Lampinen, HennaAs an industry, the fashion field has also contributed to the negative narrative of fatness by solely focusing on bodies that are extremely thin. By transitioning to the current ready-to-wear system, the fashion system has created a string of intertwined problems leading to the segregation between what is considered to be norm-sized bodies and fat bodies. This Master’s thesis focuses on the ways in which the anti-fat bias manifests in the fashion industry policies and practices. The thesis asks how the homogenized beauty ideals influence the relationship of the body and the dress and examines how these regulations are enforced when it comes to fat bodies? What is the designer's role and responsibility in shifting the narrative? The thesis studies the relationship between designers and fat people and the responsibility designers have when making clothing for fat bodies. The thesis explores how anti-fat bias could be confronted by conducting semi-structured interviews with fatactivists. It offers one example of how stigmatization of fat bodies could be taken into consideration in the design processes combining findings of the interviews with practice-led research. The findings from the interviews will work as a guideline in the collection process. The thesis will base its theory from both critical fat studies and fashion studies. - Taiteen kandidaatin opinnäytetyö
