- Impacts of ecology on construction site practices
School of Engineering | Master's thesis(2011) Lahti, JarkkoYear after year organisations all over the world need to take more responsibility of their actions. Especially environmental effects and the factors affecting them have been reviewed due to increased environmental awareness. The pressure to change is highly affecting the construction and real estate sector, which is the single biggest pollutant of the environment. This research aims to find out the ecological building processes and its impacts on construction yards. Research also tries to find ways how ecologically advanced construction processes could more effective. The research was conducted in two parts. The first part identifies ecology and its relationship to construction by a scientific literature study. The literature study aimed to find the impacts of ecological construction and the means to make them more effective. In the second part, the ecological effects were examined in two ecologically advanced construction yards. Building site's contract papers and nine interviews were used to explore how the sites are ecologically advanced and how these matters affected construction site practices. The literature study established eight factors that were affected by ecological aspects. They were costs, increased workload, and complexity of contracts, the amount of documentation, environmental certification processes, and safety at work, waste management, and image. However on the basis of the empirical study, ecology affects Finnish construction yards only in costs, increased workload and image. On the other parts, ecological construction didn't affect the site. Construction activity was seen strongly regulated and demanding, even without ecology. The single largest observed effect in the study was the lack of constructability which was seen to be caused indirectly by ecology. This was causing unnecessary amounts of additional work at the sites. A means of improving this problem can be stated as long term cooperation and commitment, or lean methods, which both focus on constructability and improving the overall efficiency. Ecology is diverse and elusive thing. However, it is clear that the future will require more ecological solutions in every aspect of life. This change will affect construction industry magnificently because it's large environmental impacts. There is still not enough knowledge how this change will impact construction yards. As the effectiveness of the construction yard is one of the most important parts of the whole process, the future research should focus more on the ecological impacts and improving the performance of ecologically advanced construction yards. - Rakennusalan työturvallisuuskampanjat ja niiden vaikutukset
