    CAD -model visualization for design decision

    The purpose for this work is to study the possibilities of producing a report from the metadata that is read from SolidWorks 3D-CAD model. The report displays the data and the processed data to the reader. The primary purpose for the report is to act as a channel of information from design department to company's other departments. The need for the reporting tool was determined by a customer interview. The main structure of the report is a result of the interview. CAD-models structure and component information was processed and split to the subcategories like: sub-assemblies, components to buy, components to manufacture, materials, blanks and fastening components. Meta-data collection is done with SolidWorks add-in CustomWorks program. Report quality and extent was evaluated by CAD-users from various companies. User's overall comments were positive about the content of the report. They also suggested some enhancements to the report. Customer interview and piloting showed that there is a demand for this type of reporting tool among the Finnish companies. As the report sums the information from the CAD-model, it gives a good starting point for discussion between the company's design department and stakeholders (internal and external).
